Jaybird,
I just measured the opening of the Dacor Dart II regulator's second stage seat. It is 1/4 inch (0.25 inches, or very close to that). So the calculation I made should be pretty close, as the R-4/Clipper and the Dart II I think used the same seat.

Jaybird,
Did you ever get the spring, and check it to see whether it works? I'm curious, as I am using this calculation for a study group studying for the Certified Safety Professional exam.

I'm pretty sure I have to change out the HP-block/seat: I hooked it up with the adjuster screw backed all the way out and I was still getting air to the second stage. I have a place in town I'm going to go to one of these days that does springs only, so I'll give them the specs you suggested...

John, I think that valve body must be REALLY old, as it's tapered where it fits into the tank valve and supposed to rest up against the o-ring. I'm wondering if it was meant to be used with the old style valve that had the teflon seat, like 1950's, and not 1960's with the neoprene o-ring. I can see where it's coming into contact with the valve, as there's a nice ring of brass showing through the plating: EVERY TIME I've hooked it up, I can hear, and feel air escaping at the place where they meet up. I think I'll take a file to it and remove the taper...

YEAAAH: I successfully polished the valve-seat! Next; I'm almost certain that I have to trim the head of the push-rod down. Since it's all cobbled together, and these parts weren't actually meant to go with the rest of the reg I have to make things fit: I have the adjusting screw backed all the way out and it's still free flowing... On a side note I may try to polish the valve seat on my Conshelf: I don't have anything to loose as it's already failed. MY LSD , um, I mean my LDS has one waiting for me, but I need to wait for him to get back from vacation. Jaybird

Okay, I trimmed down the push-rod quite a bit and it's leaking ever so slightly now. Tomorrow I'll trim a bit more off so it's flush with the nozzle...

Jaybird, do a little experiment and see whether you can make the second stage seal by pushing up on the primary lever. If so, then the spring is not hefty enough for the second stage to seal. You won't get good breathing characteristics with the adjusting stem screwed out all the way, so just sealing it is not enough. You need enough interstage pressure to make this guy work well.

GRRRRRR! It's actually leaking from between the valve-body and the main-body: anyone got any ideas as to how to seal it up? I'm thinking RTV... I think the problem is, is that this valve body didn't come with this reg, different models, and it's not actually mating together to make an air-tight seal... Jaybird

Okay, I figured it out: No.17 failed, that being the washer-gasket. It's brass and it wasn't keeping it air-tight... I'll try polishing to see if that helps: I put an o-ring in there and it stopped the leakage!

Dave and John, THANK YOU! Here's the Chief Engineer giving his opinion! I used a bit of RTV on the brass gasket, and it's holding air. I'm still playing with springs and lever height, but it seems to crack okay. I just checked, if I use the Y-valve I got a while back, I think I should be able to use my Olympic-200 to run my peripheries, like my Dacor BC... Jaybird

I just found a new way for a double hose regulator to fail; in the mouthpiece. If you'll remember, I used a Dacor mouthpiece on UDS yellow hoses. In order to make them fit, I wrapped the mouthpiece with yellow electrical tape to get the correct diameter to make a seal. Well, today I noticed that this Dacor Clipper/Dial-a-breath was not breathing correctly, so I took off the mouthpiece. Guess what? That electrical tape, which had something like ten wraps around the Dacor mouthpiece, had slid out of place, and was closing off the intake opening just upstream of the wagon wheel. I imagine that when it got hot this summer that the adhesive loosened and the turns simply slid off each other and into the opening. I had less than 1/3 of the opening clear when I looked at it today. 'Just thought you'd like to know.
