I've seen reference to that book several times here and even on fleebay. But yeah, they never go for the Amazon price. I even saw a first edition Fred's book go for $50~$60 on fleebay. Crazy. Is that book really that good? OK, guys. The next time its listed, let me know. Then don't bid against me Oh, and Jaybird. Whats Albris? Thanks a bunch! Don

www.alibris.com/Where you should be buying your books! It's kinda like Amazon: it's a portal. The prices are fixed, unlike eBait, where people smoke incredible amounts of crack Yes, Basic Scuba is listed on there at that mind boggling price too, but there are other copies too. Also, yes, the book really is THAT GOOD!Jaybird

I guess they weren't kidding when they said they were rusty. You should have seen the bottoms. Real deep pits. And with 1/2" valves it would have been impossible to clean. And most of these were under pressure when I got them. What would the likely culprit be? A poorly maintained compressor? I read a thread on here where a gentleman had some doubles and a fill station submerged the tanks while filling but he didn't fill them right away etc.etc. I wonder what happened here. Unfortunately I don't know the history behind them. So what do you think?

YUP, I just don't think they knew what they were doing, as the ones Don sent me passed their hydro's...

Don,
Quite a few things can cause the tanks to rust. Many take tanks to shops that never maintain their compressors and get wet air ... doesn't matter with alum. tanks as much as steel. Taking a tank down to 0 psi while in the water (especially salt) can do it. I used to take my tanks to a welding shop and they sent them in for hydro .... until one time a tank didn't come back for like six weeks (their hydro guy was on vacation?) and had bled my tank (a 72) ... and let it set w/o air ... luckily, after tumbling (forever) it got clean and passed hydro.
Had a friend, who took his tanks on a dive boat in So. Cal., and when he had a vis. done on his tanks, you should have seen the rust that poured out! The dive boat apparently didn't take care of their compressor ...
Most dive shops that do fills, test their air for moisture, oil, other contaminants like every six months. Ask to see a copy of the results if you don't want your tanks to rust.
What to do with tanks that fail (I wouldn't do this!) ... In No. Cal., back when they used to drill holes in them (I've drilled a few myself), there was two divers that cut the bottom off of a tank, machined it to screw together, and put a small handle on it so they could take it apart after diving. One of the divers had what looked to be doubles. Ok, many abalones can fit in a tank (illegal to ab dive in No. Cal. with tanks!). Well, when the Game Warden saw them getting out of the water, and water was pouring out of one of the tanks, the guy was wearing that looked like doubles, I guess the Warden got suspicious. Back in the day, that was a $1,000 fine, forfeiture of diving certifications and dive equipment (at least that's what I was told) ... they might have done some jail time ....

Also, I'm reluctant to buy steel 72's off e-bait. They have to be shipped w/o air and that usually means when they arrive they do so with rust!

I have a couple more that "failed" hydro. When I asked the tech about tumbling the tanks he said yeah, they'd probably pass. Grrr... Why didn't he tell me this before. Thanks again Luis. Now the problem is, where do I get 'em tumbled. I got a 1/2" in the mix to so the drill bit won't work. I miss having a LDS Oh, and Jaybird. The place I'm dealing with is the only fire extinguisher testing facility around too. So I'm up a creek without a you know what. Don

I have enough tanks to choose from locally so I'll leave Fleebay alone. They're expensive to ship anyway. Ask Jaybird. I sent a couple to him and that wasn't cheap. Glad they passed

Don, it was cheaper that buying them anywhere else, so I don't mind! Robert, I absolutely LOVE hearing stories about poachers getting caught Jaybird
