Don, here's what the gizzards of the VCR-5 look like: The Voit also has a pin in it so that you "can't put it in wrong": I had to drill a new hole in the bottom can, 'cause the hole was wrong, and made it breathe like ca-ca! While taking it apart, I quickly discovered that there's nothing inside the body(where the yoke attaches), just the sintered filter and cir-clip The Calypso-I is like this too, it was pretty disconcerting! OK,note to self. No Voits in my near future. I'll figure the couple I have out before I try and branch out to other "interesting" projects. Glad there are others out there whom I can learn from. Keep up the good work

Don, nearly all Voits are identical-internally to US Divers: the DW Mistral is the same as the VR-1 and the VR-2 is the same as the DA Aquamaster. Voit, if you remember, made the big red rubber balls we played with at school, and soccer balls... Voit supplied things like diaphragms, hoses, o-rings, etc. while US Divers supplied the mechanisms: AND... Sherwood actually made said regulators for almost EVERYONE, Healthways, you name it! The thing you need to know about Voit is that you will pay 200% + because it says Voit, and not US Divers... Jaybird

OK, that reminds me of the AC/DC song... Interesting. If I can ever find a Voit for a reasonable price I won't have to worry much about finding parts. In that case, why did everyone forget about this: vintagescuba.proboards.com/thread/3262/old-voitWill I be able to find a diaphragm for this 'ol guy? I hope so. Its the only Voit I own and I've kinda grown to like it. I'd love to put it to work at least on a shallow dive or two. I have this gopro camera see...

"OK, that reminds me of the AC/DC song..."What, "Highway to Hell"? I'd bet money that it uses the same diaphragm as a Calypso and Conshelf... Jaybird

Not sure, but there is a non-return valve in the middle of the diaphragm..? Are the US Divers like that?
And the song I'm thinking of is the second song on side two of the Dirty Deeds album.

Oh, I know exactly the song you're talking about, I'm just being an (bleep)-hole! I've always been more of a Black Sabbath fan, and when it comes to things like old gear that people scratch their heads at, well, here's an album fer ya: NEVER SAY DIE!
As for the diaphragm, yup, dat's da won! Please read my response to your "This Old Voit": I'm here for you buddy! Jaybird

Thanks for the lead on that one to Jaybird. I didn't bookmark one of my own threads, shame on me As for the ozzy inspired choice of yours, I'd listen to any Sabbath. Ozzy, Ronny, you name it. I sold my sole, long ago. HA. Fun stuff.

Well that was cool! I had a little pool time this morning before the students arrived. My tank had 2k in it and it didn't breathe as easily as my newer reg, which I anticipated, however it wasn't terrible. And the buoyant hoses was different sensation. I wish I had a little more time with it but I will be back in the tank Wednesday. I'll have to remember my GoPro.
Stoked!

Excellent! Are your levers set to their max height, that can affect your breathing characteristics. Did you like how quiet it was: did you miss having the bubbles rumbling past your ears like having your head in a flushing toilet I can't help but think that's one of the contributing factors as to why people get scuba-panic! Also did you notice how normal the air was, as opposed dry: that really bothers me about SH's... Jaybird

My time was limited but I did notice that it was quieter than the single hose I grabbed afterward. It wanted to freeflow at the surface and so I doubt I'll change the levers any but I will try it again Wednesday. I wondered about the air not being as dry. How's that? I must say I'm hooked but the instructor kinda laughed it off when I got out acting like a kid with a new toy. One of the students asked if many people dive that way and he told him truthfully, no. Its too bad. At least he didn't tell me to get rid of it. But once the class started I had to put my toy away. Man I wish there were more like minded individuals around here. I hear talk about solo diving with these. Is it because people can't find anyone to dive with them and their "dangerous" gear? Don

You hit it square on! Also people don't like them because they don't have an octo, or a source for a BC: this is why you carry a pony bottle to run these. The only person I know of who does solo-diving is John "Searat", he was trained to do it: I personally won't because if things go bad, it's super easy to get TARFU (totally and royally, you know the rest). BTW, that Healthways SH of yours is perfect for a pony/bailout bottle.
I think the reason why SH's breath dryer is the venturi-effect: really fast moving air coming out of a small opening, whereas the air coming out of a DH is slowed way down. Does that make sense, I hope?

Oh, and another reason is that the diving industry has nearly everyone convinced they're dangerous because they need to sell new gear, and so if it's old it's automatically a "man-killer": so if you have a 55 year old reg the potentiality of killing everyone in a 75-mile radius is 100% having something to do with Martian mind control rays and reverse vampire hypnosis. "Dude I seen it happen..." No matter how much you tell them the critical parts are freakin' new and the same material as their safe regs...

Well I'm not sure I'm comfortable with these to dive solo with one (yet). I have done a few solo dives before and let me tell you, you become hyper aware of everything. As for the octos, if you need to share air with someone, one of you wasn't paying attn to his/her air supply. I honestly never needed to use one outside of training. Have you? Never heard of a second stage just stop working when hooked up to half a tank of air... And I get what you're saying about the industry needing to churn out more consumers, and having just the product (and more) for them. At least the automotive industry hasn't done the same or you'd be SOL huh Jaybird? Look at the '56 Buick. Thats dangerous to drive. No rack and pinion? No fuel injection? Might just splode any minute now-lol. I better be quiet now lest they catch on

HEY, Sir Lancelot... I have a new quest for you: It was made by Sherwood: it will allow you to run two regs, a DH and a SH(for your octo and BC)! Twin-72's bruddah! Jaybird
