Sea Trial #2 Voit Porta-Sub Diving Scooter
- Sea Hunt Jerry added some weight inside the Voit Port-Sub for this second Sea Trial. It pulled very well but still needs some trim/buoyancy tuning. Had a little tendency to nose down. - Jerry will be bringing the Porta-Sub to Wazee May 30-31... Really a unique piece of diving history and quite a priviledge to be permitted to drive it. Thank you Jerry!

WOW!! Jerry; that looks great; you really did a fantastic job on that and you certainly have something to be very proud of. As for you Eben; I'm jealous; you lucky dog you got to drive it! Hopefully I'll get to see it this summer at Portage or maybe Fortune Pond. Mike Nelson would be very proud! Terry

Wazee Sea Trials- Friday May 30 was serious vintage with Sea Hunt Jerry, Tom McClusky, and SurfLung Eb decked out in their best Vintage double hose regs and multi-tank diving rigs. We took video of each of us driving Jerry's Porta-Sub... Which incidentally, Jerry has tuned and trimmed into PERFECT working order. - The Porta-Sub floated just under the surface making it nearly weightless to handle in the water. It was perfectly balanced fore and aft making it easy to point wherever you want to go. It was still pulling strong after about an hour of use so the battery definitely lasts. - Left is Jerry with original triple tanks, Voit Polaris regulator, White Voit mask, silver Sea HUnt wet suit... And of course the Porta-Sub. We'll be editing together some of the video in a few days.

Porta-Sub Preview... - This is a preview of a longer video we're working on about the Voit Porta-Sub. This video shows a totally restored Voit Porta-Sub being driven by Sea Hunt Jerry Lang who is wearing vintage triple tanks, double hose regulator, and silver wet suit like Mike Nelson of the Sea Hunt TV Show.
- This is video from our early Summer diving trip to Fortune Pond MI. The idea was to get some really clear water and shoot video that I could edit into a slick production. The trouble with planning to do a bigtime edited video production is that it is a big job and gets put off indefinitely to some period when I have the time to work on it... And in the meantime nobody gets to see the video. So, I thought I'd just upload a short piece of it for now. Something to remember what a great Summer it was for vintage scuba diving.

OK so I know the focus is supposed to be on the scooter.... But I can't help it, 1:20 in a guy lights up a flare. Was that new old stock saved for a special occasion? Or can those fares still be bought? Tried to find them myself on the web but came up short. Nice flare vid..I mean DPV video!

Or can those fares still be bought? Tried to find them myself on the web but came up short. Nice flare vid..I mean DPV video! I too, would like a flare or three. They would probably be fairly expensive if original. If homemade, a seperate thread on how to make one is cettainly in order. DD

I think those are magnesium flares, which react with the water itself when ignited. They may be rather hazardous to handle and store. John

I know that they are magnesium flares, the question still remains. New old stock that some one held onto? or is there a company that still makes these? or put this another way..who was that masked man with the flare in the video? What is his story? how did he get in this film?
Even if some company still makes them I imagine they cost a small fortune. There is plenty of junk about common road flares and how they will some times burn underwater. Even marine flares but with the caveat that they will burn underwater AFTER they are lit in air.
This guy had to smart off and and just pull back the sleeve and wham. White lighting! Be interesting to know the full story. Could be Surflung is just real good with CGI and it's just old Cousteau video craftily merged in.

When they burn in water, they release hydrogen gas, which can itself lead to explosions. Here's the material safety data sheet on magnesium powder: sds.chemtel.net/webclients/safariland/raw_materials/Magnesium%20Powder%20(Hart%20Metals%20Inc).pdfAlso, did you see how that flare poluted the water in Silver Springs? I did not like that. John

- Thanks for noticing! The underwater flares are yet another part of the Sea Hunt Forever show that was for the most part un-noticed by the greater diving community. That is kinda sad.. going to the effort of custom pyro and have it pretty much go not noticed. Anyhow thanks for the info on the story behind the story.

I don't think all of us got the "story-behind-the-story." Mind sharing it too? I did appreciate the flare, but being a "safety guy" wanted to point out the potential hazards. I don't want our vintage people getting into something that could hurt them. John

Surflung and Sea Hunt Jerry, I have a "new" fight scene for the Sea Hunt special you guys do at Silver Springs. It involves the Porta Sub. John
