"What, speak up, I can't hear you!"
I did an experiment and swapped out the second stages between the Scuba Star TD and the Dart: the first stage of the HW mated with the Dacor breathed heavy but sounded fine. The first stage of the Dacor with the second stage of the HW: holy mother of pearl that was LOUD, my ears are still ringing! It was free flowing and ringing/squealing--SIGH!

Jaybird, I tried a different experiment with my Dacor Dart II today. I put a Dacor Olympic second stage on it in addition to the Dart II second stage (the first stage was the Dart first stage). Guess what? The Dart II honked, and the Olympic did not. The honking on my Dart II is definately coming from the second stage.
I think I've found a new use for my Dart II second stage. I have a Dacor Nautilus CVS without a regulator, and I'm probably going to put this regulator onto the Nautilus CVS so that the Nautilus will function as it is supposed to function. Currently, when I dive the Nautilus Constant Volume System (CVS), I must have the water inlet valve open to descend, as there is no automatic feature to compensate for the increased pressure (the original regulator on this system was lost). If I don't the increasing pressure could potentially cause the sides to collapse. This will be a good use for the Dart II second stage.

John, when does it honk: on inhale, or exhale? I know my Hope Pages will squeak on exhale, so I'm wondering if it's a diaphragm thing, acting like a reed ya know. If on inhale, perhaps it's something to do with a harmonic created by the diaphragm and levers?!?!?!?

Jaybird, it honks on the inhalation. I played around with my Dart II a lot yesterday, and figured that it may be corrosion that caused the honking; nope. Then I figured it may be air leaking out of the pin area where the levers contact it, and so put a gauge O-ring on the seat pin; nope. So I'm not sure what is causing the honking sound. It is quite pronounced when I inhale softly, but not so pronounced on a harder inhalation. The honking goes away completely when I take a really fast, deep breath. I think that it has to do with air flowing over the metal piece that routes air directly to my mouthpiece. I also found out that the Dart II has a much larger opening than the original Dart for the mouthpiece, and that different symmetry could contribute to the honking.

John, I'll ask my friend Jim Steele about this problem as he's a Dacor tech, and has been for longer than I've been alive! Also does your second stage have the plastic cap, I think it goes between the two levers to act as a damper: if I remember it's on the top one; I'll get some pix up in the morning and we can compare, eh?

John, does yours have that nylon cap? I hope not as I would imagine that a lack there of would cause your noises: you'd just need to put one on Did you keep your old hose you cut? If you did I would imagine a hydraulic shop could crimp a new hose on for you: I'm going to look into that! Jaybird

I was going to take photos yesterday, but my camera's battery needed a charge. So that will happen today sometime. Yes, I did keep the old hose that I cut, and it is somewhere, but I'm not sure I want to invest that much time and energy into the Dacor Dart. Performance-wise, I doubt I'll take it anywhere except the pool. And all of my second stages for the Dart have that nylon cap on the primary lever. I think that was integral to the design. The mouthpiece openings were significantly larger on the Dart II than on the original Dart, which I found surprising.

As there is very little information about these regulators readily available I thought I'd post some images as to what things look like. Here is the first stage assembly; I tried to put them in order: Jaybird

Okay, this reg might be THE worst breathing reg I've ever seen! I need to make a manometer to see just how bad it really is... I did flip my NOS diaphragm around to help give it a wee bit more mechanical advantage; it got a little better. I've even tried two other diaphragms, one was silicone--STINKO! I guess I'll be turning this into an Olympic-200, cuz my HW Scuba Star, tilt-valve, puts this thing to shame Jaybird

I understand that the Dacor Dart was the breathing noise used for that character (name escapes me now--Darth Vader?). This gives me an idea for next weekend too. John

Oh, when I put the diaphragm in backward, it would make a pretty good pop as it snapped back into place...
