Hope everyone can dive the river some time soon ... the salmon start returning about the second week of July and they are all gone by the third week of October. It's still a good dive site any time of the year and you'll never know what you'll find if you head south to the bridge (the fish barrier dam is due north; easy to navigate). One time we found a floor safe, that appeared to have been blown open, and took it to Oroville PD. The best thing I found was a dive knife and Andrew got it. One diver found a silver token for a casino in Reno, NV (we found out it was made before 1974. That's when it became illegal for casinos to use silver for tokens) ... Form other videos you will see, there are lots of bicycles to be had.
If you find anything, and can remove it (excluding game and wild life; it's a game preserve and there are heavy fines) please do so. It will help keep the river clean! Shopping carts will require a lift bag ...

In February, just so everyone knows, the water temp. is in the low 40's. I usually wear a full 3 mil. suit (3/16" for those who are "vintage"; don't you just hate all the metric stuff?). Diving season it's in the upper 50's so I wear a shorty ...

Diving season it's in the upper 50's so I wear a shorty ... As a Florida diver, 50 degrees would warrant a full wet suit (thicker than 3 mil) at a minimum if not a dry suit.

Okay, just told my wife, we'll see you there! I think we'll be diving a Healthways Scubair-300 and Waterlung Navy Unit-II...

Cool! Hopefully others you know will show up (like Terry (duckbill) and Jerry (fish-n-beer))
If you take your picture with a dead salmon (like Terry did) it will take a couple of weeks to clean your wetsuit.
Robert
I get there a little bit early (parking in the shade is limited) The best place to change is the Fish Hatchery Restrooms ... The outhouse at up the hill from the Nature Center has flies and stinks!
... and the Boss Burger is the place to eat! Rolling Hills in Corning also has great food (and senior discounts) and I go there and play the penny machines and drink free sodas ... There's a lot more to do around here ...

Joe,
Bob has a lot of insulation, and so doesn't need the wet suits that we do. I would dive my full wet suit in these conditions, and wear gloves as well. I'm getting wet today, and expect the water temp to be about 58-63 degrees F.

John,
I wear gloves and a 3 mil. hood with my shorty ... and I wear a dive skin under my shorty. Blackberry bushes have thorns ... helps keep me from getting stuck. The blackberries are nice and sweet ... another reason to dive the river ... and so are the grapes. I forgot to mention that.

John,
Last time I dove in water in the 60 - 70 degree range, I just wore trunks and a T-shirt. Didn't have to bother with a weight belt; my steel 72 sunk me.

GRRRR! I couldn't sleep the night before and just didn't have the energy required to dive on Saturday--VERY DISAPPOINTING! On the plus side I finally got to meet some really great people, Robert, Andrew and Terry!
Terry, AKA Duckbill, went way above and beyond the call of duty trying to get my wife and I in the water: much thanks buddy! Looking forward to next year, and I'm really hoping to have the sleep-thing under control, because it's TOTALLY-BS being tired all the time...

Jaybird, it was great finally meeting you and your wife. I respect that you were willing to abort the dive when you felt you were exceeding safe margins. I also thought it was neat that you and your wife didn't want to dive without eachother. There have been times when I've had to cancel dives because I felt too tired to be safe (and other times when I should have). There's always next time.
But, you guys did get to get away for the weekend and were able to be with fellow divers. I hope the rest of your stay was pleasant.
I disassembled that dive watch that leaked and as it started drying out it came back to life. But, the display is a bit affected, and the paint inside the crystal came loose. If I had had screwdrivers with me I would have aborted the dive as soon as I saw the leakage (that I was half expecting) to open it up then and there. I probably could have saved the watch, though I still would have had to deal with the stripped screw and sealing the watch again. Maybe I'll permanently seal it up and use it for diving until the new battery runs out in about 10 years from now.
Any way, thanks for coming up to visit.
