Perhaps some of you have noticed I haven’t been on as much lately. I decided to limit my time to the forum because I realized my creativity was really suffering: now I only come on once a week; I am making an exception today!
I wanted to say that we all need to try to make an effort to be more positive because little things can add up…
I’m sure most of you know that here in California we’re having a really nasty drought, our forth year. Something I thought was neat was that East Bay MUD (municipal utilities district) has come up with a novel idea with water distribution.
Until this year they have always taken the water from the bottom of the reservoir because it’s a lot clearer/cleaner and also much cooler. Now they are taking it from, as I recall, the upper 2/3-area. They are saving this lower cleaner, and cooler water for the Fall when fish are spawning. They will release the water in bursts to mimic rain storms, as opposed to a steady flow. The cooler water temperature is need by the fish to induce spawning temperatures required by their bodies to reproduce.
It has been estimated that on the American River alone, only 5% of the salmon were successful in their attempt to spawn: imagine if 95% of the people in a heavily populated area of your state suddenly died—GULP!
Today, I noticed a PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) truck at my neighbor’s house he was working on the gas line. I asked the tech who was working what he was doing, and he explained it to me. I saw he had a monometer, and he confirmed that it was, and was a bit surprised that I could even pronounce it, let alone knew how it worked. Some of the things he had were similar to those also used in scuba. I went inside and pulled out my VCR-5 (the same color as his PG&E truck BTW!) and my wife’s Conshelf-XIV. We had a really fast comparison with the two different kinds of gear and their similarities in their usage! He was using his to service the meter, and had disconnected the mainline and had a 20-CF tank hooked up to the house…
After I went inside, I realized that he ZERO-attitude about talking to me—WOW! I went out and got his name and badge number so that I could tell his supervisor how good he was, instead of making a complaint, which is what happens 99.9% of the time!
A while back Searat John asked me if I would read what he had written for his book. So now I am helping him figure out how he can make his book better: John’s an amazing tech writer, but that’s a different style than what’s needed for narration and dialog…
So each one of you reading this: remember to give praise when appropriate, and try to go out of your way to help someone because you might just get it in return when you least expect it…
Be safe my friends,
Jaybird
