I have a Calypso-I or, model 1030, and I just can't get the second stage to stop free flowing I've swapped out a bazillion new LP seats, taken it apart just as many times, and even used a different first stage, hooked it up to my HW Scuba Star because I know for certain that the first stage is perfect! Do these need a softer seat?!?!?!?!? I noticed that the area that comes into contact with the rubber is not as sharp as all of the other regulators I've worked on... This is drivin' me nutz! I even have the nut back out enough to where the lever just jiggles loosely, and still, "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHsssssssssssssssss!" Jaybird

Jay,
I guess you're talking about a small air leak rather than a full free-flow. The brass seat needs to be flawless. Can you feel a nick in the cone when you run your fingernail along it? I'm pretty sure USD used the same inlet fitting for Conshelf, Calypso, and Aquarius 2nd stages. If you want to try replacing your's, I'll send you one.
Does it have the correct spring? If you can drop the IP on a 1st stage feeding that 2nd and it stops leaking, you need a stronger spring. Make sure the nut is adjusted out so that lever is loose. The only way that era USD 2nd stages allow spring force adjustment is to change springs. They have a different spring for primary and octopus 2nd stages.
Good Dives,
Charlie

Charlie, actually, they're two VERY different regulators. Here's the valve body: I appreciate the offer I tried this with two different bodies even, grumble, grumble, grumble The cone areas of both are really quite blunt, which is why I'm wondering about a softer seat... Jaybird

That really is a much older reg than the Calypso that came in last week. I don't have anything in my pile-o-stuff to help with that. Have you tried dropping the IP way down? Best of luck

How stiff is the diaphragm? (does it freeflow when put all together; or before being put together?)
Just curious ... I had a second stage, and the diaphragm seemed ok; but, replacing it fixed it .... took me a while to find one that would work.

Jaybird,
Sounds like you like to do what I like to do ... you bought it on ebait? I like to buy single hoses on ebait, fix them up, and sometimes never dive them. I have some I might just sell here; I've acquired a little collection. I gave away a Dacor Pacer 900 XLE a couple of years ago, and even though it was in like brand new condition and freshly overhauled, a local dive store in Monterey, CA, had the lady I gave it to thinking because it was "old" it wasn't safe to dive and she needed to buy a brand new Scubapro from them ... go figure !!!

Hey Jay,
I pulled out my oldest "aqua lung" repair manual when I got in today. There on page 59 is No. 1030 "CALYPSO". I've never seen one in real life. Very cool.
Let me know if you need a schematic.
Good Dives,

Charlie, I think you may be right about the spring: I connected ONLY the valve body to a LP hose, it stopped free flowing, but, at the slightest touch of the lever, it would begin to free flow again. I'll try some shims on the spring first to see if that helps.
Robert, I've had this for years, but I did buy it on eBait...

Charlie, thank you! I do have Basic Scuba, both editions so i hope I don't need another schem. What IP do they suggest?!?!?!@?!?

From manual
Adjustment of 1st Stage
Attach regulator to air supply. Insert 2nd. stage into tub of water so that the mouthpiece is at the same level as the water. Water must not go into the mouthpiece. Turn adjusting screw clockwise until regulator starts to pass air, back off on adjusting screw a fraction until air stops. "1ST STAGE PRESSURE 95 P.S.I. ---PLUS OR MINUS 5 P.S.I.
dang, that's lower than most regs.

EXCELLENT--THANK YOU! I wish you could see just how extra flat the seat cone is, the low IP would make sense then, gosh you can't even call it a cone. I have an extra bottom can, to compare two side by side; this is also why I was able to try it with two. My Scuba Star has an IP of 135, which I raised with shims, so this apparently is way too high. I know John has one of these Calypso-I as an octo, I wonder what his IP is...

By gum, it was the IP! I hooked it up to an unmodified Scuba Star first stage, an' it jus' sat there, dead quiet! The Scuba Star has an IP of about 95 PSIG...
Thanks buddy!

Oh, one of the things I left out was that I have a tee on this first stage, and have a Calypso-II (1050) second stage as my octo, which did absolutely nothing, while the C-I was free flowing.

Jaybird,
95 psig for the interstage pressure seems a bit low to me. I have one of those regs, and use it from time to time. I'll take a look at the interstage pressure I have on it. But you may need to get a stronger stainless steel spring at a hardware store to replace the one you have for the second stage. This regulator was used by Hannes Keller to dive to 1000 feet depth.
