Greetings!
I also trained at the Professional Diving School of New York, in 1982.
Now, I'm watching my daughter as she completes basic scuba training. I have 3 vintage regulators, and I'd like to have one of them re-certified and presented to her as a gift. Any ideas as to which one an 18 year old, new diver might be best suited for?
1. Zeagle Tech 50D with Apex 1st stage the yoke is perpendicular to the 1st stage (T-shaped)
2. scubapro G250 graphite with with scubapro MK10 1st stage
3. Poseiden 1333 metal 2nd stage withPoseiden 1225 1st stage, I don't know the exact model number or name
Also, any ideas as to where to have servicing . . . local authorized dive shop, or send to the factory?
Any suggetions are appreciated!

Ahoy matey, if it's the Cyklon, then just out of coolness, that's the one I'd choose: You can watch it in action with the Cousteau dive team on youtube when they go to the South Pole--awesome really! DD (Diver Don) has one, I still ain't convinced him yet to give it to me though Jaybird

Welcome aboard, Bo. That's great that your daughter will be diving with one of your regs. None are all that vintage, but all are good regs. I would feel confident with any of the regs you mentioned. In Lake Superior I use that same Apex/Zeagle in early season as the first stage is sealed for better cold water performance. I've found my mk10 is more apt to free flow than either of the other two. But if she isn't diving in 30 something degree water any of the above would be great. My first concern would be overall condition and serviceability. What does your LDS sell or service? Will they scoff at such old equipment? Though none of the regs you mentioned are all that old, some would try to sell you new equipment instead of servicing 10 or 20 year old regs. The Poseidon was harder for me to find parts for as there is no shop close to me that services Poseidon. Is there a chance you could work on them yourself? If not, let us know which direction you take.

Thanks for your reply. I also saw response that suggested using the Poseidon just cause it's "cool."
Because they are all solidly built, I'll go for the "cool" factor, and also because it's made Sweden, where I was born.
Now, I'll check up on where to send it.
Thanks again!

Now you mention that you were made in Sweden. That would be automatic for me. And JB, I'm sure. Some like the Poseidon for fact that the bubbles only come from one side vs two. Personally they don't bother me that much anyway. So you were first certified in 1965? Will you be diving with your daughter? I think that would be awesome. I'm turning 50 this year and my youngest 8. I'm planning on diving with her at the earliest possibly time. I hope you can witness her first diving experience. Perhaps as her partner? Please keep us informed.

Bo, have you ever serviced a regulator? I'm sure one of use could walk you through it, unless there's something weird about them that I don't know about like the ScubaPro Pilot like Searat John just picked up. I love to tear things apart and learn how they work--I'm kinda weird that way BTW I just about choked when I saw what people are askin' fer them things-- HACK!JB

Bo, For you daughter, I'd choose either the Scubapro Mk 10/G250 or the Apex/50D regulators. I'd stay away from the Poseiden regulator, simply because I've seen the older model from the 1970s malfunction twice on the Warm Mineral Springs Underwater Archaeological Expedition in Florida. The Poseiden regulator is a great regulator, but rather sensitive, and needs some extra care and servicing. Don mentioned cold water. I was looking at the Poseiden regulator, and ran across this issue of Faceplate, with an article on cold water regulators towards the back of the issue. www.navsea.navy.mil/Portals/103/Documents/SUPSALV/faceplate/March%202010.pdfGreat to see you here. John is right on this, Poseidens are good but they need a little more knowledge and for working on them some special tools are needed, and they tend to get $$$$ as well as parts. I would go for the Scubapro.

I'll put my 2 cents towards the Scubapro. Parts and people who can service Scubapro regs are widely available. The Mk10 / G250 combination is a workhorse. Just check Scubapro's website for dealers in your area.
If you need the Poseidon serviced, you can send it to me. I still have parts from when we were a dealer. I'm familiar with the idiosyncrasies of that reg.
Good Dives,
Charlie

Is this the one: I wish I had that cover! I have a few MK5s that would love to wear that cover. I wonder if they're available..? I hear the ink rubs off the Balanced Adjustable regs that look similar. Pretty sweet! Nice pic, JB DD

Oh, that one ain't mine, I just ran up the black flag as it were pillaged it! I know SP gear is great stuff, but it's just too common for me, an the only reason I have USD stuff is because I want something absolutely bullet proof for my wife... JB
