Sand Dog at Fortune Pond August 19, 20, 21...- I'm not sure it's the official "Sand Dog" event but, SwimJim suggested it over at the VDH Forum and several of us have responded with positive "We'll Be There" posts. The Deep Six Dive Club has posted lots of information about Fortune Pond plus links to lodging, etc. See www.deepsixscuba.com/divesheet.php?content=3&type=shore

Would that be an ice dive in August? I heard that summer in the U.P. is suppose to be on a Tuesday this year!

Would that be an ice dive in August? I heard that summer in the U.P. is suppose to be on a Tuesday this year! As SwimJim would say, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink". I read in Bill Mathies book that in the winter the water temperature changes from the stratified thermoclines of Summer to a single temperature from surface to bottom of 39 degrees F. It is Springtime up here now and last weekend at Fortune Pond the water temperature at 120 feet deep was 37 degrees F. Which is COLDER than ice diving, so the thermoclines are back. The temp was in the low 40s at shallower depths. We already know the water is cold at Fortune Pond. But if we forget, there will always be some clever fellow to remind us. See, when you dive anywhere with thermoclines, you hit the first one somewhere around 20-30 feet deep and that one is always colder than you can stand bare skinned. So you wear a wetsuit, hood, gloves and boots... After that it doesn't make any difference if it gets any colder when you go deeper. The suit protects you. We had 6 divers up at Fortune Pond last weekend. The Sun shone from a cloudless blue sky and we were sun bathing between dives in 80 degree temps. The lake was clearer than swimming pool water and colored aqua blue like the Carribean. From the pier you could see the bottom in the blue shadows 70 feet down. From 120 feet deep you could see the ripples in the surface above. Six divers made 4-5 dives each in two days and we're ALL re-scheduled to come back. If you're thinking, "Cripes, the diving must be good if they put up with that cold of water... " If you're thinking that... Well there just might be hope for you.

The scenery in August on the drive to Fortune Pond is worth the trip! Speaking of...do the local motels fill up fast? Should reservations be made?

I was mistaken in calling this event "Sand Dog". The connection with the official Vintage Double Hose Sand Dog event got misunderstood in a couple of VDH forum threads that were discussing possible locations. This dive get together at Fortune Pond is looking to be pretty fabulous even though we can't call it "Sand Dog".
I made up a video to give everyone a preview of what to expect. Hope you like it...

Cool video surflung. I'll have to give you my card from my GoPro so you can made some video. I'm planning on diving the UDS-1 Tripples 1st this time. I'll have my air compressor along this time and I'll have a LOT of tanks along again in case somebody wants to try something new....I'm planning on having at least 5 sets of doubles along and multiple double hose regulators. I even got a new patch for my custom wetsuit.

- That sounds great Sheriff! You will definitely retain the "Highest Cylinder Factor" designation... A truly happy diver! Let's plan to shoot some video of you and the UDS-1 on Friday. I'll have my GoPro ready. - I wish we could figure a way to run a double hose reg on that UDS-1...

This time I'll remember to bring a card for my GoPro. Last time I had no card along so I couldn't shoot any video at Fortune. I think I'll bring a blank card and then give it to you so you can do a video as two different people shoot video.

Oh yes Surflung. I also have a small Honda generator I could bring so we could recharge that underwater scooter battery on site.

Glad to see the "event" is gaining momentum, and I'm glad too that you, Sheriffdiver, will be bringing your UDS-1 again as I missed it last time. I noticed you posted an ebay link of a Dacor Nautilus in another thread. I plan to bring mine. Eben has some footage from last year, of me using mine for the first time in open water. It too is pretty cool and you're welcome to try it out if you'd like. I recommend reading the manual and training brochure that John mentioned before trying it out of course.

How about we call it the officially unofficial sand-free dog event. Or perhaps the submissive dog (less) event. I'm kidding of course. But who's to say this couldn't be an inaugural event, independent of any particular (or is it peculiar?) website, store, or manufacturer? Enough vintage divers from several states travel to this area already. I may use this image and have shirts made.

I'll have to do some reading when I get time. Working a ton of shifts right now. That's Ok though cause it allows me to buy this neat stuff!! How about Double Dog? Or Fortune Double Dog?
