How do you think I feel?!? I'm trapped in the mid-west!!! If I had the chance to even smell the Pacific, let alone see it, I'd go! Plus you get to actually meet the people on this forum!!! That would be worth it! LOL!!! Mark

Midwest is almost West. It can't be that far! A couple hills and you're here. It's not like you need a passport....yet.

Response to the proposed gathering has been underwhelming so far but October is four months away and this "event" is very informal. There are no rules or fees and the prize is each other's company and input. I put out a notice on the Monterey Bay Scuba Divers Open FB page and will mention it at the Sea Otters dive club meeting tonight. After looking at the local events calendar, the third weekend in October, (14 and 15 ) looks as good as any other time. Any comments will be appreciated. I hope that Jaybird will attend with his camera, even if he can't dive.

I'd like to bring this back to the top for a second pass and additional exposure. A Monterey vintage gathering has been proposed a couple times in the past. Maybe this is the year it will gel. I'm not sure yet if I can make it, but as the saying goes, "If you build it, he will come."
-not saying I can commit yet, but it just really needs to happen

Of course, Monterey is one of my favorite places for recreational diving. I first strapped on a Voit mask and paddled around Stillwater Cove in the 60's, and still dive there when I can.
How vintage does one have to be to participate in this event? I can dust off my Scubapro horsecollar and come up with a double-hose or my trusty Deepstar. I'm too much of a wimp to dive in anything but a recent wetsuit or drysuit.

Charlie, all you have to do is show up. This will be informal and very minimalist. I will have a red canopy with a sign that says "Vintage Diving" set up at the park near the breakwater. I may have a table with some of my gear on it. Pete Craven may participate because he likes to show off his gear. I will dive my regs in the pool to make sure that they work.
The biggest issue that I have heard about is the cost of lodging. Monterey is pretty pricey and there aren't many campgrounds nearby. The City has a park on Jefferson Street (Google it) and some people with self contained motor homes just park in the lot near the boat ramp, in spite of the 'no camping" signs. The older motels on Fremont Ave are relatively inexpensive.

Yep, you're talking about Veteran's Memorial Campground at Deer Flats. We camped there when I were in high school. You used to be able to park an RV out at Laguna Seca. Motel rates get more reasonable as you get out towards Seaside and Marina.
You know how crazy the Breakwater gets on those weekends. Early arrival is almost mandatory. Let me know when you pick a date. I'll run it by our dive club.

Charlie

Do you guys know that the Historical Diving Society is meeting in Santa Barbara September 22-23, 2017?

Charlie, October 14, 15 is the proposed date. John, I was not aware of the meet in Santa Barbara. Is the agenda posted on line?
I just ordered a Snark III Silver from a guy in IL on Craigslist. Then I read the thread here and enjoyed your comments. I am anxious to try it out.

Jim, this is from their Facebook page: I'll be in Santa Barbara that weekend for the HDS event. If you could do something on Sunday the 24th, then I might could make it. I'm planning on taking my wife up to Napa after the HDS event, and Monterey is right on the way.

...... set up at the park near the breakwater. By "park" do you mean the lawn?

Yes, although it is named (somewhat grandly) the San Carlos Beach Park.

Yippie! Count me in for sure. I usually dive Monterey at least every other month. Sorry guys, it's been a while since I've been on the forum. Been busy helping my daughter on her fixer upper house this past year. I am so looking forward to a vintage get together. duckbill and I have discussed it in the past but never got things going. For those looking for a hotel- The Lone Oak Lodge is very very diver friendly w/ a dive gear rinse area. I usually bring my 5th wheel and stay at the Navy RV park called Monterey Pines. In fact if you have a camper I might be able to get you in as a quest camper. crabbyjim let's get this thing going for sure.

Thanks Jerry! You bring up a good point. There are additional accommodations for active and retired military.
Any comments, suggestions and recommendations are welcome. We get closer to October things will start to gel. Maybe Scubadiverbob will join us.

How does the list look now? I've got work to do in Monterey the week before Saturday 10/14, so will be there if you need any help ahead of dive. I hope to have some garage cleaning done by then so I can bring some of the finds.
