Got 3 boxes of old crap excellent vintage gear, a double table, and my personal dive equipment including a new wetsuit, and some other gear I want to test, including a Scuba with JB's snorkeljet! Tomorrow is Day One of the gathering (not THE gathering - different movie). Message me if you don't have my email or number. Post lots of pictures and comments on the Vintage Diving in Monterey California FB page (unless you live in a cave like some of our peeps).
The weather topside will be mid 70's with cool nights for comfortable sleeping. Most of the smoke from the northern California fires has blown away. Water conditions are what they are but still more fun that diving in a quarry. Be ready to eat, drink, dive, lie and have a good time.

Today sucked in a major sort of suckiness, tomorrow (Sat) is forecast to equal or exceed the suckiness of today, but Sunday is supposed to be better. At least one local dive shop canceled their outings/tours today citing conditions are "too sucky". It is rough and murky.
I came down today to get my wetsuit and weight set up and confirmed the 5mm material in my new 5mm wetsuit cannot be near 5mm (maybe 3mm) and I froze my keister off. It's going back and my new Scubapro goes in for mods to let it out some, so's I can breathe a bit when I put it on.
@#$%^&! No diving this w/e.

But, thank you for your honest report. I hope you'll still stick around for the meet. Was the visibility more than 5 feet at depth? 10+ feet?

Even if conditions aren’t ideal for diving, we will still be able to get together and have a good time. Fish&Beer went to the Aquarium with his grandson today. Tomorrow will be sunny and warm. Point Lobos is open and Moss Landing/Elkhorn Slough is alive with migrating birds and resident otters. As my late friend John Larsen used to say, “If you want to know what the weather in Monterey is going to be, drive over there, park your car and stick your head out the window.”
unless conditions on s are totally blown out tomorrow, I’m going diving!

I hope my report on conditions doesn't keep anyone away! The weather in Monterey is beautiful today and everything Jim said is true. There's nothing nicer than Monterey on a nice day.
I am looking forward to meeting whoever comes down, and will be here tomorrow and part of Sunday.
A solo diver who was filming (he was down a long time on 1 80) said at 40-50 feet vis was 10 feet. "You know, like always!" he says. That's plenty for a real North Coast diver like Jim!
See you soon!

I'm going to the Fish House on Del Monte at 5 to get in line for some oysters. Anybody wants to meet up for oysters, clams, and steam beers should come over! I'll be in line out front or at the oyster bar! I'm having mine raw. Even the beer!

As a river diver I'm used to 5-10' vis. I just expect more when I make the trip to the ocean. This is my son's second time to Monterey. Vis was about 5' last time for his cert dives, and they only did what they needed to practice skills while holding on to a float line. Hardly fun. Then, when they were trying to get out for the second dive, I got through the surf to be with the students as they made it through. It wasn't really that rough, but it sure was for them. It was almost comical watching the instructors literally trying to DRAG the students through the surf, like, "We came all this way. We're going to finish the open water dives no matter what! So we don't have to tie up another of our weekends". Just picturing it in my head, I have to laugh, but I felt sorry for the poor students at the time.
Any way, I just want my son to experience Monterey like I did thirty years ago when I was living on the Peninsula. 20' vis seemed the norm. Maybe I was just lucky. Lots of kelp forest, too.
Hitting the road in a couple minutes. We'll be staying on the Peninsula, then making the commute to Monterey at zero-dark-thirty tomorrow morning.

Did two dives today, I dive a Kraken DH, surf was rough but just have to time it right, a bit or surge on the bottom, some sea nettles a few nudis and if you head out along the wall the sea lions will probably come play with you. Viz was a good 15’ once you get past 35’ and away from the drop off. Not the greatest conditions but far from the worst. Dive early with the out going tide and you’ll see the best viz and a bit warmer water 57° until 40’ than 54°, incoming tide we had 54° anywhere below about 15’.
I think I met Vance before the first dive and fish and beer before the second.
Home obligations will keep me away this weekend.
