Here it is, my latest project. US Divers DeepStar, circa 1965-1969 era? Very little challenge getting this apart, cleaned, and put back together. The hardest part was finding a "donor" exhaust valve and diaphragm from my "Scuba Junkyard". Mark Save

Mark, very fun, you'll have to do a side-by-side with your Scuba Star...

With the USD venturi, the Deepstar will probably out-perform the Scuba Star a bit. Great find!

With the USD venturi, the Deepstar will probably out-perform the Scuba Star a bit. Great find! John What I meant to write was Scuba Star TD down stream model! (been sick now going on three weeks) I'm specifically interested with the exhalation effort though They're both brand's economy models, and the HW is economy to begin with. That USD configuration didn't last long. The next version of the Deepstar was the DS-II, and it lasted what, about 63.5 seconds But seriously though, the DS-II is a really weird one... It reminded me of a can of Underwood Deviled Ham with a yoke thrown on it: Just do an image search for one, and you'll see what I'm talking about JB

Not exactly the most difficult regulator to put back together. Next up is the successor, The Aquarius*. Mark
*If the Deepstar II is considered an "evolutionary dead end".

I took my Deepstar down to 30' for 20 minutes and drained an almost empty tank until the J-Valve kicked in today. The Deepstar dove just fine, no problems I could tell of. Mark

A while back I got a 70's era US Divers SPG from John. I had the idea to use that with this reg., but plans have changed. I found a cheap deal on a 60's era Sportsways "Sea-Vue" SPG that is the same era as this Deepstar. The 70's US Divers SPG will find it's home with the Aquarius. Once I get them all sorted out I'll send photos. Mark

I dove July 4 with my Phoenix DAAM. I bought this reg of "the bait", I think it needs an overhaul. When I got it, it had the Phoenix with the original second stage and a rubber duckbill which was toast. When I turned the air on there was a loud pop. During the entire dive it felt like the valve wasn't open all the way, but it was. It delivered air but not the way I expected. I think my next dive I'll try out one of my Snarks. Skip, I've had that with regs before. There was an issue with an o ring when I heard a pop in my regs. Might wanna give it a look. Just my suggestion. I've had it happen in Calypso J's and IIIs. TD

...When I turned the air on there was a loud pop. During the entire dive it felt like the valve wasn't open all the way, but it was. It delivered air but not the way I expected... I've had this occur too, so far only with USD equipment, Calypso-V and my wife's Connie: so both piston and diaphragm, and it was a seating issue both times. What's weird is for a while they both had a rock steady IP's, but that changed, and fast too! I'm not familiar with the phoenix, but you may want to at least look at the seat and check your IP. JB

Have you checked the reg over well? If the DB was toast, I wonder what the main diaphragm and hose check valves are like. If someone went through the trouble to add a Phoenix and did not upgrade the rest of the reg I really wonder what was going on in their head. Also, the second stage is not the easiest thing to set up correctly. Have you checked it? With a silicone main diaphragm, silicone check valves and DB, it should breath pretty good if the second stage is set up correctly.
