What's up with the opening in the can, Howard? Has it been opened up with tinsnips?

I still have some Pilot repair pieces, but I am actually looking for Pilot 2nd. You will find some Pilots are not original as some were "upgraded" but removing some of the internal parts and replacing them with an Air I poppet. I just picked up a complete AIR1 upgrade kit for the Pilot including new diaphragm. The Pilot I have is really too nice of an example to modify and I prefer to leave it stock, as I expect the next owner (will eventually happen) will appreciate a stock, original 2nd stage. I do have an AIR1 thats needing a diaphragm, so Im hoping the recent purchase will interchange and some of the remaining parts to repair the AIR1 as well. s-l1600 (2) by holat88, on Flickr

Howard and other divers with a Pilot regulator. I have the Scubapro manual for the AIR-I and Pilot regulator, but I cannot post it here. If you would send me a PM with your e-mail address, I can give you access to my Google Drive area with this manual so you can download it. I have been waiting to post on the Pilot, as we may have a very interesting new thread on the Pilot coming (hopefully). Here's some more photos of the innerds of the Pilot. This is the Pilot second stage. Here is the top area that includes the venturi nozzle. I have just found out that by rotating the top cover you can move the venturi nozzle to optimize the venturi. Looking down into the top of the regulator with the cover removed and the venturi nozzle and spring removed. The disassembled second stage with parts shown in sequence. This is the lower end of the pilot valve and main valve. A different view of the working parts of the Pilot regulator. The "U" shaped lever is what attaches to the diaphragm and provides the initial movement of the valve. John

John, I see you have what looks like the original mouthpiece for that: is this correct? My one and only SP has that type of mouthpiece...

John, I see you have what looks like the original mouthpiece for that: is this correct? My one and only SP has that type of mouthpiece... JB JB, Yes, that is what it came with, and probably the original mouthpiece. The regulator is in dive-able condition too, and will see action in the Clackamas River when conditions improve (probably somewhere around Memorial Day weekend). It breathes very easily, but has some "popping" of air due to the pilot valve, I think, upon the initial breath. That apparently goes away in the water. John

John John, I think this is inherent to these types of regulators: evidently the Tekna 2100's will do this too. Michael said that once you get them to depth though, you'll never ever find a better breathing reg, OK those are my words, but he said that he couldn't out-breathe his no matter how hard he tried. So there ya go JB
