This is probably a somewhat unusual request.... But maybe someone here can help me finding out where this artwork originates from? It was printed on the back of a toy packaging back in 1976 / 1977. The toy was a "Mego" action figure from a line called "Johnny Action". Now on the other packages of that toy line there were similar artworks that had originally been created for covers of British comic books from the 1960s/ early 1970s. So I first thought that this piece of art might also be from some old comic or magazine cover. But so far I haven't found it. It's also possible that the artist did use some photograph as a template for this. They did this for two of the other artworks.
So, has someone seen this artwork (or a similar one) somewhere else or maybe a photograph that might have been used as a template? Any help is appreciated.

Hmmmmm? I seriously doubt it was from a photograph: the perspective is off, actually by a lot! Also, if it were from a photo, they'd have gotten the technology better: yes it may be the technology they have on the toy, but I see things that look like what could be: a rebreather's scrubber-cannister, a US Divers Calypso-III second stage connected to, a Dacor Olympic first stage connected with double-hoses. Very cool image though, I think it was done in water-base tempera-colors! Here's a cool toy I have: and BTW, yes, I am a fine artist: JB

Here is the toy itself: It's approximately 7 inches tall and a "bendy" figure (rubber with wires inside). The other figures in the line are different, with joints and fabric clothing, though. I think this bendy figure was made from a mold that was previously created for Mattels "Sea Devils" line (from 1969 / 1970). I wonder where the included shark comes from? (is it a shark?)

Ummmm, you are aware that the gear is wrong, very wrong for the stated time on that package-- RIGHT? ... No, not really. Maybe I should have said more clearly in my initial post that I am not a diver... (sorry ) I am collecting this line of old toys (that I played with as a kid, back in 1977) and one of them happens to be this diver. My assumption was that the art on the box might be an existing painting that the manufacturer simply re-used. I had hoped that someone here might have seen it somewhere. It wouldn't surprise me if the suit and the equipment of the figure wasn't accurate. It's just a toy and I don't think that the manufacturer tried to make it accurate. But if you could point out the things that are wrong that would be great. Thanks

Oh, and if you want to see a great film about sabotage during WW-II, I highly recommend this one: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Manus%3A_Man_of_WarIt's a nasty little film that does anything but glorify war, it actually tries to show the wreckage that is left behind of people's psyches... JB
