Oh, and in case you're wondering: they stopped making that style because the high-impact-plastic ones were waaaay cheaper to produce! I really like mine a lot, nice and snug... JB

So, TD, here's some porn to get ya hot'n bothered boy: ... JB What a lot of people don't realize is that this pak, and the USD equivalent (they are essentially the same except the quick releases on the harness and the decals) has a feature for the weight belt. If you look closely, you can see that there is a "groove" for a two-inch belt on the bottom of the pak, between the pak's frame and the tank. So the weight belt con be on the pak rather than on the hips. john

That's what they called them in the old days according to Jim Steele: he'd know! Right now the BC is just a prop: who knows how many hours I have trying to get it to hold air reliably, but rest assured, I will make it work one day... JB JB, West Marine sells a product (https://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-marine--inflatable-boat-sealant--444679) that purports to seal inflatables from the inside. Try it on that Dacor horse collar.

I have one of the Dacor packs in the photo and I have no problems with it. I like the Healtways "square and flat" pack from the 50's and 60's as well. Might consider the "band and harness" setup as well. I have two of them and like them, plus they don't take up much extra room in a vehicle. Mark

I swear this is one of the items that when you need one, there are none to be had. When you finally start getting one or two, you stumble onto a shop that has a cache of them gathering dust in the corner. I know a shop in Port Clinton, Ohio, U.S. that has such a "corner"... Mark

GRRRRR! The problem is these have/had a unique OPRV: I've tried all sorts of things to try to get a modern one to fit One of these days I'm going to look into a vinyl-welder to make a new bladder JB

Jay, how much does a Vinyl welder go for? What could you do with it, other than making custom bladders? I'd be interested in one too!

D'know, might have to actually make one. The thing is finding the right temperature and height/gap: you'd only want to melt through the equivalent of one layer... Geeze, I sound just like Phil right now and that's a really good thing! JB

In my never-ending quest to find the quintesentially perfect rig for beach diving I did the following. I love my VDH backplate and I like using a 71.2 steel tank and DH reg for beach diving. I also want the option to put a small 18# BIU on the rig. For the latter I use my Kraken or a Phoenix conversion DH so I can have a LP inflation hose attached. However, when I attach my VDH plate directly to the 72 with cam-bands I have a problem with my Phoenix DH since it sticks out too far from the valve and protrudes out from the backplate into my back. (With my steel 95 I don’t have that issue but, again, I like 71.2's for beach dives). A neighbor gave an old beat up 71.2 the other day. The tank was thrashed but the valve was good and it had a set of AT-PAC metal bands on the tank. Got me to thinking. I took out the too-long (1.25 inch) attachment bolts from the metal bands and replaced them with a shorter (0.5 inch) bolt. I drilled a hole in an old OMS single tank adaptor plate I had laying around, and another hole in my VDH plate, so that both bands would fit the tank (and I could raise the VDH plate high enough to be as close as possible to the bottom of the DH cans). I used “Tee-Nuts” to mount the VDH plate on so that I didn’t have bolts jutting into my back. Using the single tank adapter extended the tank off the VDH plate about 3/4 inch which was just enough to bring the exhaust can even with the plate - problem solved. All of this metal also added about 2.5 pounds to the weight of my rig so I can take that off my weights. I know, I know, I should really get a life but it’s these little projects that keep me going. TechniDiver... Did you get your 72 tank pack sorted out? If you want I can go to the shop I haunt and snag one of the several US Divers "Mariner" "blow-mould" plastic packs from the 1970's I have one and it is a decent pack... I might even grab myself another? Mark

I'm going diving next weekend and after it's latest mod (second cam band) I think it'll be ok for now. If it's poo-poo I'll let you all know, and I might need a pack for the 72. I'll let you know Mark, thanks for the help!!! TD

Would a VDH backplate work for this application, provided that it comes with cam bands? TD I use one with an Argonaut wing on my 72.
