Hello I ran into one of these early to mid 1960's US Divers "Bac-Pac" Tank packs at an area dive shop last week. Not a big deal to some, but I've been keeping my eyes open for one for a bit now. From what I've seen in catalogues, these are circa 1960-1965-ish? I have not posted anything in a while, so this was an excuse to share something. Mark

Those are great backpacks. I use mine all the time. Very comfortable actually. Mark

I have one. They appear in the 1960 Aqua Lung catalogue.

I used one in the early 1970s, and the only thing I did not like about them was, with no cross-chest strap, the shoulder strap (plastic and quite slippery on either nylon or neoprene wet suits material) kept slipping off my shoulder. John

I believe I have both versions. One plastic the I haven't used and the nylon type that I have and continue to use. Good stuff, Mark!

Don, are you meaning the shoulder straps? The Bad-Pac I shared on here has the "plastic" type. I'm guessing there might be a middle section under the plastic in the strap that is nylon or similar? I'm not sure how "pure plastic" would hold up as a strap? If that made sense?
Was this type pack offered with straps other than plastic? I could see them being replaced/retrofitted with nylon over the years. There are a couple more type US Divers version of tank packs I'd like to find in the future. Mark

Hey Mark, That is what I meant. I'll try to add photos later. I may actually have two with the nylon straps. I'm not sure which came first but I remember reading an earlier thread about the differences and as I recall, others thought the shoulder strap were slippery like John suggested.

I have two versions of this pac. The most common seems to be the version with metal hardware attaching the shoulder straps. I have had problems with this one slipping off my shoulders. I have not tried this yet but I wonder if switching the straps so they crisscross each other at the pac, would keep them from slipping off one's shoulders? The other version has slots for nylon straps, however the pac still has the two round molding where the hardware would be attached. This one tends to not sip off my shoulders but it does not have provisions for a crotch strap which I prefer to keep the regulator low.

A sternum strap might be helpful too JB

I dove this today. Sort of felt like the straps would slide off my shoulders, so need to adjust better next time. I was wearing a horse collar and a bulking 7mm wetsuit. Think I'll try it later in the Summer when I only wear a wetsuit top. Mark
