Didn't some of the very early tilt-valves overheat a lot? Mark I saw this this morning and thought, what the heck has Mark been smokin', but then I realized what day yesterday was, 4/1 April Fools Day! Yeah, that one was "high and out side", but I checked before swinging at that pitch, so I'll take my base now JB Okie Dokie, I get it now. John

Join the Healthways cult Ty!!! No seriously, Healthways are fun to dive and there are no other regs that look like them. Mark I have a Scuba and a gold label, but haven’t mustered the nerve yet to try and get them running. Maybe someday.

Ty, you'll be very impressed with the Goldie: I need to make a Snorkel-jet for my Scubas, and while I'm at it, I'll make one for you too: it's a great mod that will turn it into an open water reg (safer)

If you have the parts on hand it takes about 12 minutes to get a SCUBA up and running.... One of the easiest rebuilds I've ever done. And they are FUN to dive. Also check out the Healtways Single Hose Regs, they are fun and different too. My Scuba Star overheated so bad that it warped the plate on the diaphragm, but I was able to get that straightened out and it runs just fine now. LOL. No, seriously Healthways Single Hose and Double hose regs are a lot of fun, plus they just look like nothing else! Mark

Looking forward to the discussion on this. Guessing Jay will be by in the next few hours? My extremely limited experience has been overall good. The one Healthways Scuba Star that had a tilt valve I have (I have since used the tilt valve part to complete my 1961 Scubair 300) took very little effort to rebuild. I basically took the second stage apart, cleaned it and put it back together. It worked just fine, on dry land, have not dove it yet. I guess finding parts would be the hard part if one were to rebuild one today? Esp. the hose with both male ends...but I think an adapter would work? See what the more experienced members have to say, esp, the ones that actually have dived with a tilt valve. Mark

I'm sure you have progressed beyond this statement, but if you still have questions, we can get those regs up and running!

Need size of attachment on a lp hose that I need for a 1960 scubair tilt vale regulator...and possibly what source I go to to find this item,,,Thankyou much for any advice you might be able to give me,,,,Jim. Hi Jim, the hose you need for this regulator is 3/8"-male on both ends. I'm unsure as to the source for it, as mine are all working --sorry! You can have them made though, look for a shop that makes/doeshydraulic-hoses. I know you PM'ed this question, but perhaps someone knows where to find what you're looking for, like Charlie!!!
To echo Phil, welcome aboard Jaybird

Jim, that's why we're here! Searat John got me started on HW-gear, but being the iconoclast that I am, I bit down extra-hard on it when nearly everyone was saying how s**ty the stuff was... No worse than anything else from the period, it's just that it didn't have the same upgrades that things like Voit and USD had/have. I prefer a challenge, as opposed to simply buying a kit and slapping it all back together--YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN!

The Healthways Scuba Star was my first single hose regulator. I used it for several years, before upgrading to the AMF Voit 40 Fathom (the Voit take on the first Calypso regulator). The problem with a tilt valve is that at depth, under heavy workload, it doesn’t provide as much air as the Calypso (which is what Dick Anderson was evaluating it against). Then they went to a downstream second stage, with a hole aimed at the mouthpiece. That came very close to the Calypso’s performance. Dick Anderson evaluated several downstream configurations before settling on that one. With that, they were close to Calypso performance. No single hose regulator was approved by the U.S. Navy Experimental Diving Unit until the Calypso III and the updated Conshelf by U.S. Divers, followed very closely by the AMF Voit MR-12 (“MR” stands for “Military Regulation”). The key was enlarging the exhalation valve opening, not the inhalation. The U.S. Air Force Pararescue (which was my unit) used the original Calypso because it was better for our parascuba jumps, and we did not need to adhere to the Navy EDU’s recommendations. Once the downstream second stage was established by U.S. Divers Company, Healthways and Sportsways followed suit. But the latter two manufacturers didn’t immediately enlarge the exhaust opening, and so did not get Navy EDU approvals. Here are a few photos from my collection of Healthways regulators.
