It's my duty to give you grief whenever possible: you know that right? Jaybird, the pesky-bird

I'm always sweating bullets before getting into that deliciously cool Monterey water. Then, I like to lie on the bottom and get cooled off.
Haven't vomited yet....

W'll, I thought that was the whole point of a dry suit? JB It is, I’m just wondering how much thermal I need to wear under it. When I did the photo shoot in Laguna a few years ago, I only had on a pair of waffle knit long johns, and I was uncomfortably cold. That was in late September. I have thicker thermals, but if you have to stay geared up for a while before entering the water, then overheating is a problem. That’s probably more of an issue with diving from small boats. Been there, and it’s miserable vomiting due to overheating. When I was diving my Aquala dry suit, I wore a 1/4 inch Farmer John bottoms under the dry suit, with a sweater over the top and a wool stocking cap hood. That kept me warm in 37 degree F water. John

Bring your cold water underwear. The trek to the water takes about three minutes so if you and your buddy are prepared to gear up overheating is not a problem (barring last minute gear problems).

Last minute gear problems are my life. You've been there, CJ. The 3 minutes to the water thing is true, but what about the 30 minutes in the wetsuit trying to get it all together? Bump.

Ok, the dives went well. I ended up wearing a set of merino wool long-johns under a heavy Polartec fleece jumpsuit. We launched out of Whaler’s Cove, and then took the RIB around to Bluefish Cove. The temp on bottom at 65 ft was 46°. Vis was around 8-10 ft, so we didn’t get to see much. Air temp that day was cool, so there wasn’t any real issue with overheating.
