I was assembling my new center section in my J-62 manifold. A friend had come over to watch the process as he was going to be assembling a set of doubles for the first time ever and wanted to learn how. He asked me how I made sure the center section was pointed straight down so his DH reg wouldn't be at a weird angle. I have always just eyeballed it, but it got me to thinking so this is what I did. I'm sure I'm not the first person to do this, but it worked great! I tightened the locking nuts with the reg/level in place.   |

Scuba lawyer, I don't do that. I want an angle to the center section of the valve, especially if I am using a military harness (my preferred harness), as I want the can of my double hose regulator to match the angle of my back. I find that if the regulator is exactly 90 degrees to the tanks, the bottom of the can digs into my back. So I set it to a slight angle, but not enough to interfere with the hose deployment from my Trieste 2 or Mossback Mk3 regulators.  John & Mossback Mk 3-1 by John Ratliff, on Flickr John |

John, good point, also it struck me as a bit odd in needing to that as a diver's body is dynamic in its movements and a regulator's angle is never in the same position twice at any given time: but as they say, "It ain't hurtin' nobuddy..."  JB |

I know an awful lot of people that do it that way but I also know a few who do it your way (not to mention any names, but Eben, are the hairs on your neck prickling up? ) Safe Diving. Mark |

Dave Curry, Pa rarescue trainee in the center, has a closer proximity of his back to the regulator than the other divers.  USS Divers waiting by John Ratliff, on Flickr I am now 5' 9" and I used to be 5' 11" tall; that change has caused a bit more curvature of my back, so for me, especially with my thin AL doubles, the 90 degree hurts (that tank set has the newer Aqualung solid manifold, and I cannot change the angle). I am now 5' 9" and I used to be 5' 11" tall.. Tell me about it, I used to be 6' and now I've shrunk to 5'10 ish. Getting old sucks (you heard it here first ). |

You sure got a lot of good response to this post! Yes I set my valve at a slight angle intentionally but I think I'm doing it in the opposite direction of SeaRat. I set it to tip a little backward so that a Banjo SPG hose will clear the center of my tank bands. I HAVE had a regulator dig at my back but it was a Phoenix, which is quite a bit longer and sticks out further than the DAAMs, RAMs, Mistrals, and Kraken that I usually dive. In these regs, the Twin 38 w/double hose reg is THE most comfortable tank and reg combination IMHO. - I should add that I wear the military style harness and that set up certainly does put the regulator can right up against your back... Pretty much perfect position if you wear the tanks at the right height. |
