Mark, according to my 1970 catalog, you are now the proud owner of a "DM-10 Universal: Dacor's most popular mask features slanted design for greater viability. The finest sealing mask in the world. Blue and black. 5.95"
I think mid-1970's

I say mid-70's because it doesn't have the screw on the bezel...

I was thinking that too...but the site I went to with the Dacor cats., only went to 1969 and they had the nut/bolt on top.. Was hoping this was older, but still not bad. Mark

Mark, There were two versions of this mask, the DM10 and the DM12. The only difference between the two was that the DM12 had a non-return purge valve mounted at the bottom of the oval glass. I have a U.S. Divers Champion Deluxe mask, which is the equivalent to the DM10, without any nose pockets. I have used it in diving, and still occasionally use it today. There is a trick to clearing your ears with this type of mask. Make a fist, with your thumb out, and you will see that the thumb and first knuckle on the first finger of your hand make two "bumps." These two bumps can be then pushed against the bottom of the skirt to plug your nose, and if you blow gently, you will get the same Val-Salvo method clearing that you get with nose pockets, but without the nose pockets inhibiting your vision. Clear Lake Research Dive1 by John Ratliff, on Flickr Here you can see me using the Champion Deluxe mask without nose pockets on a research dive in Clear Lake in 1971. Dive Log--Clear Lake001 by John Ratliff, on Flickr* Here is my dive log of these dives, and note that several were to 73 feet (about 22 meters). So clearing is not much of a problem even without the nose pockets. John *I was only about a week out of DaNang, Vietnam and the USAF when I dived on this project.

Eleven PDF-format scans of Dacor catalogues can be viewed or downloaded from the excellent CG-45 website at DACOR CATALOGS. The Dacor catalogues for the years 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1978 and 1980 are available. The DM10 model with the screwless stainless-steel rim can be found on page 21 of the 1978 Dacor catalogue and on page 20 of the 1980 edition. Download and see! 19781980So with the currently available evidence, JB is right in saying that this may be a mid-1970s mask. It's not in the 1974 Dacor catalogue and we don't have access to the 1975, 1976 or 1977 Dacor catalogues, so we can at least speculate that the earliest year of the mask's introduction was 1975, while we have documentary proof of its availability in 1978. A particular DM10 mask may, of course, have been made after 1980, because we don't have access to post-1980 Dacor catalogues. DRW

DWR,
I have the 1977 Dacor catalog, and it is in there too. I may also have an earlier reference. It has the same photo too.

If it has to do with MFSW's (masks, fins, snorkels, wetsuits) you can always count on DRW!

Since this one still has the decal on the glass, should I keep it as is, or dive it? Was hoping this one was older, but still glad I snagged it! Mark

Since this one still has the decal on the glass, should I keep it as is, or dive it? I was under the impression that round/oval masks were not popular anymore in the mid-late 1970's? Guess I was wrong and there still was a market for them? Was hoping this one was older, but still glad I snagged it! Mark

Mark, I remember watching Magnum P.I. and seeing the character Rick Wright, played by Larry Manetti, having a round mask on one of their escapades: this show was from 1980-88.
DRW, when did low volume masks start showing up?
JB
EDIT: I say dive the mask, but leave the decal on...
