The piston first stage DH mod is back-burnered or dead. One never knows what the future will bring, but the old thread is no longer relevant. Also, I have decided that using Dacor cans is a dead end until someone starts making reproduction diaphragms. That will probably be never.
The temporarily named Conways Balanced Rev1 double hose regulator is now decidedly taking shape. The first stage attachment to the Healthways Deluxe top can is essentially a done deal. It is very like a Mistral with the same kind of gasket seal and locating pin. The only thing left to do here is to actually mount the first stage in the can and drill the pin locator holes. This will not happen yet, as I don't want to commit to hogging out the Healthways can or drilling the pin hole in the can until a couple of things are worked out, such as:
1. Will the second stage scheme work as planned? I'm probably going to make a mock-up can out of sheet metal, and see if I can get the parts to fit correctly. The LP air feed tube might prove to be a pita, and maybe not even workable. It could also be kludgy, ungainly, and embarrassing. I don't want to invite comparisons to the New Mistral......
2. Will I retain interest in this mod long enough to finish it? I'd not like to destroy a vintage regulator by cutting it up if I'm not going to follow through. Admittedly, the top can I'm eyeing for this is pretty shabby with crappy chrome. Still, it's solid and could be rechromed and rebuilt.
Well, who knows. I'm continuing to forge ahead. The second stage is next. I have ideas about this and have some potentially mod-able second stage parts in my pile which will get stared at for a while to think on. A trip up to the Secret Cache of Wonderful Things for some other single hose second stage parts may be in order.
