Hello I wrote about it because on April 24, a diver from the Polish special forces missing during an exercise. He was a professional diver with many years of experience also in combat operations. Possible that he made a serious mistake or was unlucky this one time. It's sad that despite of experience, procedures and buddy's...he is dead. RIP So we makes mistakes, but luckily - as Rainer noted: "There are more lucky and very lucky divers" All the best gents Pawel

Hello Pawel , hello
That's a sad storie , especially for the family , friends and the big diver family . It's in the human natur to take risks , maybe love risks and to make mistakes .
As young diver I read all I could find about diving accidents and learnd a lot to avoid the mistakes other diver had made bevor . But this was not enough to avoid my own mistakes . As a typical young male I thought I will never be so stupid to drown me . This was wrong . A scuba dive under ice (as the tank was empty) continued as freedive and a few minutes later as black out . I was rescued and reanimated . I had to accept that I only survided with the help of other people .
It was stupid to bring me in this situation but I could resist the urge to breathe up to the blackout . My breast and diaphragm jumped up and down , but my freediving experience helped a lot to ignore this . I had to die , not with the nice narcotics of the depth , only 7 cm under the surface in an dirty and schallow waterhole , what a shame . My fist punched the ice but the reaction was zero . Now I was a creature without fear (or other emotions) that used all the abilities the lack of oxigen had left behind to stay alive . I came close to the exit and I don't activ inhaled water . That helped the rescue and the reanimation .
Today lot of attention is given to the gear and the way to use it . There is nothing wrong with , but don't forget the naturally abilities of the diver himself . If you run your IP hose perfect this may save you 15 sec. in an emergency , but freediving abilities may give you additional 150 seconds . In a 15 sec. hurry it's hard to stay calm and think .
Greetings Rainer

Hi Rainer I am agree with you in 100% that freediving abilities may give us "calm mind" when we will need it the most. Look at the modern way of diving view ... scuba diving is for everyone, you can try, it's easy & safe... You will dive with divemaster who will CARE YOU even if you are not swimming...you even no need to think...crazy. It will be good idea to make "obligatory" basic free diving as a beginning of scuba course. As I remember, my 1995 course still included training with horizontal dive for 3m than swim about 20-25m than go up than after short break vertical diving to 10-12m and you have to "pass" it to complete the course. Dive to 10 m, off the aqualung than ascend with free breath to surface...than free dive back, don the aqualung than end of air so buddy breathing. Surface swimming with and without: tank, snorkel, mask, fins, loosing the snorkel, mask, one fin...it was easier without BCD just correct weighting, nothing special "diver's skills" only maybe useless now but made good habits and "calm mind" during emergency...am I wrong? BDW...I have PA61/II - Duomat and spare parts to rebuild ) Best Pawel

Hello Pawel Hello
For a CMAS certificate you have to do some freediving examinations .
CMAS * 25 m distance dive with fins or 20 m with fins and wetsuit wetsuit jacket . 30 sec. breathold with moving 10 m 3 times 2m - 5m deep dive in one minute
CMAS ** 30m or 25m distance with wet suit jacket 7,5m deep dive 45 sec. breathold with moving 10m
CMAS *** 45m or 40m distance dive with wetsuit jacket 10m deep dive 60 sec. breathold with moving 10m
OK , that's better then nothing . I can't find anything comparabel in PADI or the other commercial certificats . May be I'm wrong ? These performances are possibel only by self-control . Your body instead has a lot of better biological abilities , or can you for examble control your spleen ?
The question is which kind of exercieses do activate these abilities . If you practise in the water some one should watch you for safety . This isn't possibel many times . Practise on land is safer , you can do it alone with low effort . But there may be a problem . In upright position on land the weight pulles the chest down and the elastic forces the diaphragm up . You breath out , your lung volum is small , the CO2 concentration raises quick . To hold your breath inhaled you may use your breathing muscels and the diaphragm , but this way you are not realy very relaxed . Throad closed you may relax ever muscle , but now the pressure in the lung hold the chest up and the diaphragm down . This pressure is not good fore the venouse bloodstream , the heart rate and bloodpressure may raise up . There is a easy way to avoid this .
The arms low pressure position : Stand up but let your arms hang down relaxed and breath in as mutch as you can . Now raise your arms approximately 90° and a littel bit to the back . You will be able to breath in more and find the position for the max inhale . Hold this position , breath out as much as you can and move your arms down . Now you can breath out a littel bit more .
The bodys low pressure position Now lay down with your back on the floor and your arms in the max. inhale position . Even if you are very relaxed the weight of your shoulders and arms pull your chest open . You may be able to hold your breath throat closed , every muscel relaxed with 70% or more of your max. lung capacity without significant pressure in your lung . Your heartbeat must be slow or as usual and you must feel well .If not reduce the volume you inhale . it is allways posibel to hold your breath exhaled .
Try it for yourself , breathing and breatholds in this position are such a fun that I don't want to miss even if there would be no benefit .
Pawel : Concerning PA 61/II - Duomat I have a PA 61/II and for me it is one of the best doubel hose without venturi . If you want to offer a Dräger reg. or parts the " forum.historische-tauchergesellschaft.de " is the best place I know .
Greetings Rainer
