I got my FX cans from eBay today. These are for a GL conversion, since I have a spare valve kicking around.
I installed the GL valve into them by filing out the hole, and all is well but for a couple of things. Actually, only 1 thing, but it reminded me of another mod I want to make in order to maximize the reg's utility.
The first problem is, since the cans are plastic, they are thicker than the stock metal cans. This causes the yoke nut to sit too far up the valve body so the part that fits into the tank valve seat is too short by a small amount. It won't seal on some tank valves.
No problem, I can turn a bit off the nut. I could turn the can down a bit, but it's hard to set that up, and it would weaken the can.
The other thing I'd like to accomplish is to make a new internal yoke screw that is shorter, which would allow the use of a banjo for an SPG. That should be easy enough. I could make one out of Delrin, but I'm concerned about strength for this use, so I'll make a brass one.
BTW, the FX cans and the GL valve work great together, and I have another great breathing DH regulator! And yes, the hoseloop has the correct baffled mouthpiece:
I will replace the too long screws with the right size as soon as I get to the hardware store.
The Green GL is working excellently. I turned down a spare yoke retaining nut to expose some more of the protruding sealing surface. Now, the yoke turns freely and the valve seals. I am contemplating turning down the yoke barrel nut, but find myself balking at modding a vintage part. If I could find another loose part, I'd do 'er. My other option is to make a new one to see how well the banjo will work with this setup.
How about just using a valve that allows a HP outlet. There are a lot of Dacor and other valves that will allow you to use a SPG.
Ah! I misunderstood you. Yes, I have several tank valves with ports for an spg, but I realized the nut on the GL can be easily turned down a bit to fit the banjo. I might just do it, since this GL valve has no stock cans and the mod won't hurt anything.
I don't really like the SPG attached to the tank like that, either. I have one tank set up like that, and the SPG swinging off of it all the time is kind of a pain.
Wow. I just looked back about 30 pages or so. The thread with the most views I found (before becoming weirded out that I was doing this) was JB's More Healthways Questions thread with over 30K. Another notable thread was John's Dacor Dial-a-Breath thread with over 17K views!
Strange that it was these two not so popular regs/companies that garnered so much interest.
Dah-zam bruddah, that is a staggering number ain't it!
It's kinda more fun playing with stuff that's not the popular kid in town. Last weekend we were at vintage camping gear get together up in the Mendocino National Forest, where we got to play with things like these 1930's lanterns made by Akron, as in Ohio, not Coleman, although there was plenty of Coleman gear, it's just not my bag:
