Some of the old Voits (Trieste, Titan II, MR-12, for example) had black painted lablels. A lot of them that you see now have no paint left. What seems to happen is that the temperature difference when you get in the water causes the metal to contract and the paint to loosen up. The label will come off in flakes. Not good.
I took a can of clear lacquer and sprayed over the labels on my Titan II and Trieste (after taping around the label to prevent over spray). Specifically, I used "Illinois Bronze (Div of Sherwin-Williams) Triple-Thick Coating Crystal Clear Glaze. Bright glass like coating. High solids formula quickly builds a bright clear coating giving the illusion of depth. Special flexible formula won't crack and can be used metal and plastic."
Wow! That's good stuff. The labels look better now than they did to start with. They look like they have a glass coating. And they should be protected from any further paint flaking off.
