Thanks diverdon for the postings hadn't seen "The Deep" article There was a paperback book on the making of the film called "Inside the Deep" which I lent out and never saw again, tried in the past with no luck to track down another copy, that said I feel a "Google" moment will take over after I've logged off.

Don,
I have never before seen that SDM article, and it has that wonderful diagram on how the Dacor Nautilus CVS actually works. I really, really appreciate your posting those. It gives others who have never seen or used the Nautilus CVS an idea on how it actually works.

Actually, this is the thread I want to resurrect. As I said, i've been working on my Dacor Nautilus CVS, the one without a regulator. I'm about to put a home-made regulator system onto it, as currently it has no regulator. I'll update this soon.

Here's what I'm going to do to create a Nautilus CVS regulator. I'm starting with a Sportsways Sport Diver second stage: I'm fitting the regulator mouthpiece tube into the mouthpiece for a Healthways double hose regulator. It will seal along the mouthpiece, and then I'm putting an oral inflator on one end of the Healthways mouthpiece: I'm then going to seal off the exhalation valve with Shoe-Goo so that the only opening will be to the Nautilus CVS inflation hose. Here's the other side view: This way I'll have a completely sealed system, which I can either orally add air or use the regulator purge button to add air. This can only happen when the Water Control Valve is opened. When that valve is closed, the regulator then automatically adds air as I dive deeper. Now, to complete this and test it in open water; that is my project in the next few days. John

I look forward to hearing your results. Did you try this once before?
Godspeed my friend!

I think I was going to try this before, Don, but then I got the other unit with a regulator. I even had one regulator modified, but I never did put it into the unit or into the water. Now, once the Shoe-Goo is dry, I'll put everything together and pressure-test it on land. If it passes that test, then it will probably go into the water next week.

Odd that I hadn't noticed the other thread that you had recently resurrected regarding the Nautilus. You mentioned another vintage diver interested in the CVS. Is (s)he a member of the boards? I hope you get some good pics or video. I always enjoy reading about your adventures with your rigs as I hardly ever seem to get the time to use mine :/ please kepup the posts. DD

Don and all,
Great news, the jerry-rigged Nautilus CVS regulator works! I tried it out this afternoon, and it added pressure to the Nautilus CVS without bursting the Shoe-Gooed non-return on the Sportsways Sport Diver tilt valve regulator that is affixed to the Healthways mouthpiece (sealed, of course, and that is tied into the Nautilus CVS' inflation hose as described above. I had to use an external tank, as the AL 80 I have on the Nautilus right now has no air (I store it without air to preclude the potential for sustained stress cracks on the neck and threads). I'll get it filled soon, and put the whole unit to an open water test.
I am using my White Stag DEEP 1 regulator, as it has the long hose on it now and will be ideal for testing the Dacor Nautilus CVS. The first test will be in open water, and because it is holding pressure, it should easily be successful. Photos will follow.

I have identified two potential problems with my White Stag DEEP 1 regulator/Sportsways modified Nautilus CVS regulator setup:
1. The Sportsways regulator, which functions well for the Nautilus CVS regulator as it is modified, had a very worn, cracked and decayed LP hose. I looked around, and my Healthways Scuba Star regulator (with the tilt valve) has the same hose, so I switched them. Now the Sportsways Nautilus CVS-modifed regulator has a good hose that won't part or leak on my test dive later this week.
2. The White Stag DEEP 1 regulator is working very well, but is equipped with a 2475 psig yolk. I found that my Sherwood Magnum Blizzard regulator has the same yolk screw, and has a 3000 psig yolk, so I switched them. Now my DEEP 1 regulator has a 3000 psig yolk, and that is good as the tank for my Nautilus CVS is an AL 3000 psig tank.

More updates on my White Stag DEEP 1/Dacor Nautilus CVS; the hose that came with the second stage was too short, and so I had it changed out to a 36 inch hose. While doing that, we found that the original hose had deteriorated enough that it should not be used. I have now put my Suunto Cobra dive computer onto this unit, and it is ready to get wet. The 80 AL tank is full, and if I can I hope to put it in the water Friday. I have a committment tomorrow, and it is raining today. Friday looks good weather-wise, but I'll have to see (I also have a leaking nose right now). More to come...

Well, my nose went from leaking to a flood, so no diving today. My next opportunity, depending upon my cold's status, is early next week. I simply don't dive when my health is at all questionable.

Here is my dive from yesterday. It was not one of my better dives! Here is my dive log entry:
So much for my experiment with the home-made regulator. But that's what experimenting is for, to learn more about something and try things that haven't perhaps been tried before. It is not only through successes that we learn, but also our failures that may give even more information that makes these pursuits interesting.

Sorry to hear that your CVS Nautilus mod didn't work. Is your working model still on loan?
