Hey everybody. I've been coming back to this site and to Vintage Double Hose for the past several months to look at thegear, but finally decided i ought to jump in an get to know everyone.
As far as I know, I am the only person interested in vintage diving in my neck of the woods (Oakland,CA).
I do most of my diving in Monterey and am curently finishing my PADI Dive Master program. Needless to say my instructors think Im nuts with all of this stuff. I am hoping to be their missionary of the vintage gospel.
I started diving in 1987 when I was 15.
The modern stuff just seems sort of clunky and souleless to me.
I just bought my first Double Hose Reg (DA Aquamaster) on Ebay and once it has been looked at by Dan, I will need a lot of advise on learning to use it. Up until now I have been using a Conshelf XIV, Dacor Horse Collar (Which just broke), Steel 72s on an aqualung harness, (I have a pair of twin 38s but have been advised that they are problematic when it comes to buoyancy), My favorite masks are my Oceanways Pacific oval and another one I have called a Mariner (?). I go back and forth between split twin jets (I know, I know - they're just really easy) and my AWESOME Rocket fins.
Please consider this an invitation to anyone out there to contact me if you are ever in the Monterey area and want to hit the water. Its cold but pretty neat!
Looking forward to getting to know y'all

Welcome OystrPir8! You have definitely come to the right place for Vintage Diving. There are several members of this board who live in California (duckbill and scubadiverbob to name a couple). I'm not sure how close to Oakland they are but I bet they will let you know. It's great to have you as a part of this community. I think you'll find that the members are friendly, extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. Welcome aboard and Stay wet! Regards, JES

Good Morning, OystrPir8,
Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you've already noticed that a lot of good and knowledgeable people are active members here. Join in and have fun!
I'm in Yuba City about 30 minutes north of Sacramento. I dive mostly fresh water (river) here, but get to Monterey once in a while. Maybe we can buddy up sometime for a vintage dive.
I also have twin 38s and LOVE them. Mine ARE buoyant, and with the extra weight needed because of it, plus the weight of the tanks, I carry about 9 pounds more than I do with a steel 72 (out of water). BUT, the twins are GREAT with double hosers because it puts the regulator nice and low between the shoulderblades where it should be and don't hang down so low. I also understand that not all twin 38s are buoyant. Check yours out. Either way, they are THE way to go!
BCNU, Terry

I'll have to try the 38s out. 9 POUNDS, THOUGH! Hey OystrPir8, That 9 pounds I mentioned is that the tanks/manifold weigh 5 pounds more than a steel 72 on a backpack, and the other 4 pounds is what additional weight is needed on my weightbelt compared to when I'm using a steel 72. The whole 9 pounds doesn't all go on my belt. Once again, welcome! Now start a thread! -Terry

OystrPir8,
I've had a very busy month or so, and haven't ventured into this side of the forum until tonight. This group is very diverse, experienced, and interesting to discuss topics with. So welcome, and enjoy the dialog and learning that goes on here.
One note, I do venture into the Santa Clara area from time to time, and maybe we could get together and go to Monterey for a dive. Thay would be very nice. I was in Santa Clara for a week just recently, but was very occupied for that time. Next time, I may be able to plan better.

Welcome aboard OystrPir8! I live on the shores of Lake Michigan. I have a DAAM which I enjoy. I picked up the fitting so I can run my BC and an octo off the hooka port. Something to consider. It's almost cheating. About twenty five years ago I spent about six weeks diving the Monterey/ Point Sur area. My sister was stationed in Point Sur at the time and living in Monterey so I had a place to hang out. A really neat area. I'd like to go back someday and dive the kelp forests again. Again, welcome aboard!
Jim

Welcome to the forum. Glad to see that your having fun becoming a double hose diver, no longer a girhly mahn. You know, there is a tradition, you must in order to truly join the elite ranks of vintage divers, you must take a single hose regulator and with the words spoken "For You Mike Nelseon, because you where there for us" and then smash it low to bits and toss it into the sea. It does not have to be anything expensive but an Apeks or Aqua Lung Legend certainly would set your mind right. Do it when the PadI bunch is around, they will run from you squeeling like little children. Now you have become a frogman.

and then smash it low to bits and toss it into the sea. Nemrod No, no, you've got it all wrong. Assuming that it's made of brass, melt the reg down, and cast a new double hose. THAT'S manly!

Hey, did you see the forty pound salmon Terry caught with his bare hands in the Feather River? Go to VDH and look in his photo gallery ... I was there (someone had to take the picture) ...
He will tell you it was dead; but, it sure is a good fish story ...

I'm hoping to go to Monterey in the near future. Little short on funds; but, with gas prices droping I might just make it. I got Aquarium memberships and olny went there once this whole year. Got to get my moneys worth. Hey, have you seen the new great white they have there?
