Here is a link to the trailer for the new Bill Murray movie "The Life Aquatic". It is a Cousteau Spoof. There looks to be some nice vintage gear, UDS-1 & double hose regs. Great cast should be fun. -Ryan lifeaquatic.movies.go.com/main.html

I will go for it when it is release, from the mouth piece, I guess Bill Murray is using a MEDI two hose.

I think the mouthpiece is supposed to be an early La Spirotechnique mouthpiece used during the late 40's to early 50's when they were using surplus hoses from WW1 gas masks. It does not jive with the rest of the equipment though. Ryan Spencer can tell you all about it!
I'm guessing it's a copy of the mouthpiece since they are pretty hard to come by.

Hi Ryan
I read somewhere a dive system used in the movie is NUMAs, is it same as the UDS-1?

Sam, I'm not familiar with the NUMAs system. Do you have any other information or photos. As for the unit in the film, the imagaes in the trailer are all that exist at this point. It is my best guess that the tank unit used by Murray is a UDS-1. There may be another system out there. The UDS-1's are relatively available at least more so than othe tank shells. I will keep my eyes open as more images surface. There is a variety of equipent used in the film so there is a possibility that both are used. Time will tell.

Hi Ryan
The production supply agency bought the NUMAs unit from a diver in BC, Canada as sample to reproduce the equipment for the film. I am trying to locate the diver that own the gear. I think he will have more info of the gear use.

I look forward to your findings. I watched a high res. version of the trailer and in the image where they jump off the back of the boat it definitely looks like a UDS-1. It seems to have the same valves at the bottom and the shape of the hosing looks Identical. I can’t quite make out the label but the decals look like those of the UDS-1. -Ryan

Hi
I just came back from a nice weeks vacation down in Florida and while out diving on the Budwiser barge I over heard four Canadian divers talking about this film and mentioned that a great deal of the old diving equipment was supplied by a Canadian collector out of Ontario who has family ties to the Emile Gagnan family. Apparently he has some of the original Cousteau dive team diving and film equipment and other collectibles unfortunately that is all I heard.not very helpful I know.
Good luck in your search

That is interesting. I would guess they were talking about Phil Nuytten. He gave a very interesting lecture on the development of the Cousteau-Gagnan regulator at the HDS meeting. He had a most impressive collection of regulators on display and that is only the tip of the iceberg. He is definitely knowledgeable on a wide range of diving equipment. He is also the inventor of the Newt Suit and has been referred to as the Henry ford of Submersibles. -Ryan
