Just noticed on a Ebay search that a seller in the UK is offering a boxed set of The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau , 36 Episodes on 18 DVDs. The only problem is that they are region 2 / PAL format. I searched it on Amazon, and could not find a US edition. Anybody have any idea why so much more of Cousteau's program are available in UK than they are here? Having grown up watching those programs, I'd love to get the DVD collection.

Hi
Perhaps he is copying his own and labelling cd's. I never understood why these flicks were for sale over seas and not in the North America also, it may be a rite to distribute thing.

They are legit. I have them. The only problem is that they are in the European format. The rights to these films are owned by different companies in different countries. They release them based on the percieved market. There is very little interest in the US. They have relased two different sets of DVDs in the us within the last year. I recomend the Cousteau Odyssey series available at Amazon. I suspect we will see more if the current releases sell well. -Ryan

I've got the Cousteau Odessey , great shows, particularly the Britanic dive. Maybe I need to invest in a Region 2 DVD player. I actually saw that Philips sells one that will do multiple formats.

Watching these beautiful reproductions is like a time capsule. They are so wonderfully non PC. They are hammering on the reef, harrasing the fish and even catching them into plastic bags where they are then tormented by larger fish. Does anyone else think that parrot is fake?
I love the costumes, the "spaceman" look. The silver suits, so stylistic and totally non functional, the flying saucer. Such a time warp back to a different approach to the sea and it's contents. Amazing. Oh, gotta go, they are " exploring the northwest sector to 1,000 feet". Nemrod

If you would like to view overseas DVDs, like the Cousteau collection, there are several ways to do it. 1. It costs money to put region controls into a player. Cheap DVD players may not have the coding. Here in Australia, the $100 and under models are region free. Just check the box label on the low priced players at discount stores. I got mine at Radio Shack in Australia, but I have not looked for them in the USA. 2. You can also go to: www.regionfreedvd.net/ and buy a region free player. I found one about a year ago. It is an Advent. It uses any power, any TV and any dvd. It cost $100 a year ago. 3. Another way is to go to: www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html?aid=50069&gclid=CNyylp-i7oICFQVqDgod4xpyqQ and down load the program to your computer, if that is where you want to watch the dvds. There is a free trial for 21 days, then you pay for a code to keep it. Look for the progam with the fox on it. Some of the computer programs actually allow you to remove the coding. However, I have no experience with that.

"Who, when??? I'd like to see it."
The Silent World. Fantastic transfer, like I said and I meant it as a compliment, this DVDs are so like a time capsule to an earlier time and different perspectives. To Cousteau he saw the sea as a wonder to be settled andconquered much like a pioneer. Now we see it more as something to conserve and protect from such thngs. Hardly forty years has passed. Howabout all the cigarette smoking, comical almost and yet they thought nothing of it, that would never fly today--no way. Thanks for the wonderful DVDs. James

Cousteau released over 130 hours of films and TV footage from "Par dix-huit mètres de fond"(1942) to "Lake Baikal: Beneath the Mirror (1999), two years after his death. There is no doubt that if your goal is to view all or most of this footage, purchasing a region free DVD player is very useful. It is also important to note that purchasing the footage currently available is an important step towards the release of more footage on DVD in the US. The following TV episodes are available in the US:
The Jacques Cousteau Odyssey: The Complete Series -The Nile Part I (1979) -The Nile part II (1979) -Calypso's Search for Atlantis Part I (1978) -Calypso's Search for Atlantis Part II (1978) -Time Bomb at 50 Fathoms (1978) -Mediterranean: Cradle or Coffin (1979) -Calypso's Search for the Britannic (1977) -Diving For Roman Plunder (1978) -Blind Prophets of Easter Island (1978) -Clipperton: The Island Time Forgot (1981) -Lost Relics of the Sea (1980) -The Warm-Blooded Sea: Mammals of the Deep (1982)
Jacques Cousteau Pacific Explorations: -Australia: Fortunes In The Sea (1991) -Australia: The Last Barrier (1989) -Australia: Out West Down Under (1990) -Tasmania: Australia’s Awakening Island (1991) -Australia: Continent of Dreams (1991) -New Zealand: The Heron of the Single Flight (1988) -New Zealand: The Smoldering Sea (1989) -Papua New Guinea: Into The Time Machine (1990) -Papua New Guinea: river of the Crocodile Men (1990) -Papua New Guinea: The Center of Fire (1990)
Footage available in European DVD formats:
-The Entire Undersea World Series (1968-1976) -The Silent World (1956) -Lagoon of Lost Ships (1976) -Mysteries of the Hidden Reefs (1976) -Voyage to the End of the World (1975) -The Search for Atlantis I & II (1978) -New Zealand: The Rose and the Dragon (1988) -Australia: The Last Barrier (1989) -Great White Shark: Lonely Lord of the Sea (1992) -Secret Societies of Dolphins & Whales (1993)
In my collection I have about 105 hrs. I would be happy to help people locate the films that they are most interested in. If you send me an e-mail request I will send you a complete list of Cousteau films. I can then help you locate copies of the films you are interested in. If you let me know what you would like to see I would be glad to make recommendations. For example films featuring dolphins, ship wrecks, undersea archeology, the diving saucer, or films featuring specific equipment: Hydrodynamic housing, Technisub RAID, French triples, wet subs etc. Let me know what you are looking for.
I am constantly looking for new films to add to my collection. Of particular interest are any of the 20 or so short films made from 1942-1956, and The National Geographic Special on Conshelf III entitled The Undersea World of Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1966)Thanks for your interest. -Ryan

Also, I have come across the following and wondered what the "Cousteau Collection" is? It doesn't appear to be any of: Odyssey, Pacific Explorations, Undersea World/Silent World (6 DVD box set), Undersea World (18 DVD box set) - Can you advise what this collection is? Also, is there a collection called "River Explorations"?
