Great! Unlike "Sea Hunt", the original "Flipper" is a show I remember the first time round here in the UK and there have been repeats on terrestrial and satellite TV. If anyone can't wait for the DVD version, here's a page dedicated to the theme tune. It plays an instrumental version when you access it: tinyurl.com/3xnmg4Altogether now! Ev'ry one loves the king of the sea, Ever so kind and gentle is he. Tricks he will do when children appear, and how they laugh when he's near. They call him Flipper, Flipper faster than lightning. No one you see Is smarter than he. And we know Flipper lives in a world full of wonder, lying there under, under the sea.

Hi David. Back in 1966 the song "flipper" was recorded in the U.S. by the Little oyster Band! It was played on the radio back then. I was a dj at that time, and everybody knew the song. I know well of Newcastle on tyne. When to England a few years ago, I drank lots of good "Newcastle Brown" so I know where it came from. Your lucky to be near the brewery! I am in kentucky usa. I am lucky to live near the "old hawk" distillery, so I have a good supply! Cheers, Chucko

Hi! Didn't know the name of the group which sang the Flipper song, I just remember the children's voices. Newcastle Brown is probably advertised more in the States than it is here, where it's also known as "Journey into Space" because of its strength! It has its own website: www.newcastlebrown.com/home/and our local supermarkets stock "Newcastle Brown ice cream", which I must admit I've never tried and am not sure I want to either! Kentucky is famous here too for its bourbon, which some UK people prefer to Scottish whisky and Irish whiskey. I guess your location means that you do most of your diving in lakes and quarries? Newcastle is only about 20 miles from the North Sea, where I did a little snorkelling a couple of weeks ago, kept warm by one of Bill's Hydroglove vintage-style drysuits. The sea has been a little too rough since then but I'm hoping to go for a dip tomorrow if the weather and sea-state are both clement.

David, here in kentucky there is no where to dive. There are quarrys a few hours away but they are all the same and boring. I go up into michigan to dive, as the lakes are very clear fresh water, as well as the florida springs. When I learned scuba back in 72, I dove the springs and sinkholes several times a week. I worked in a garage where the owner was really cool, and didnt care if you took the afternoon off for some fun. I will be to florida april 10th to look for and dive a NEW spring recently discovered, and pick up some 50's gear. Do you have many dive shops over your way? I enjoyed window shopping, and going to the motorcycle shops. They have more triumph parts here in america than they did over there 30 years ago. Those big clear bottles of "NUKE ASTLE" brown hit the spot. Old hawk whiskey warms the bones after a chilly dive.

Westgate Road in Newcastle used to be famous for its motorcycle shops and that was also where the city's main dive shop was. The latter has since moved to the Blackfriars area, close to Newcastle's Chinatown. There is another dive store near Newcastle's eastern city limits, on the way to the North Sea coast. Both shops are reasonably stocked, but I have great memories of the Cooperative store in Grainger Street in Newcastle's city centre, circa 1950s, whose top floor housed the sports department. In my mind's eye I can still see a tank with a double hose which had pride of place on the wall in the middle of the department. Happy days.
I went on a tour of the Great Lake states, including Michigan, many years ago with my brother, who lives in Minneapolis. We went up to Sault Sainte Marie just into Canada and I remember staying in a remote motel somewhere in Michigan before returning to the Twin Cities via Chicago and Wisconsin. I'm a little hazy about the actual route - it may have been a couple of trips, as I used to go to the Upper Midwest almost every year during the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.

Thanks, Jerry. I'll be sure to do that. Not certain when my next trip States-side will be, though.

Hey - in case anyone would like to encourage the folks at MGM Home video to release seasons 2 & 3 their telephone number is 1-888-223-2369. I would encourage people not to all call right away but to spread them out throughout the year so that they dont just think there there is one tiny group interested.

Wow! Thankyou, Robb. I keep checking Amazon from time to time over the last two years since Season 1 came out. It would be a shame for them to quit mid-stream and forget about us. Hopefully some phone calls will help. Flipper has alot of great vintage diving footage. Robb, did you find an address as well?

For what it's worth, all three seasons of the original Flipper series are up on www.hulu.com. And has been mentioned elsewhere, there's plenty of vintage scuba moments...rubber masks and fins, old style tank backpacks and beavertail wetsuits galore! And if you want to see some Euro style vintage dive gear, Hulu also has the movie Tentacles, an Italian made Jaws knock off starring John Huston, Bo Hopkins, Shelly Winters, Claud Akins, and Henry Fonda (yes, THE Henry Fonda!). The divers all are seen using mid 70's style Technisub dive gear...those black and orange beavertail wetsuits and those twin tank rigs where the tanks themselves were hidden in this sort of plastic shell.

That's pretty cool, Thanks. HOWEVER I STILL would love to own the series on DVD to watch from the sofa. I just cant get myself to watch a film on the computer.
