So what do you guys and gals think? I had been giving this a bit of thought and I would like to start a website and forum dedicated to the history of skin and scuba diving in the Pacific Northwest region. The concept of the site would be a sort of virtual museum/photo gallery/meeting place for those who are interested in the history of Northwest diving.
The site would cover diving in Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and maybe Idaho and Northern California. The time period would cover from the early 1950's to about 1980. It would contain stories, a discussion forum, and photo gallery. It is basically a dedication to those people who pioneered diving in our region.
I would love to get some feedback on the idea.

Neo1968, I like the concept, but remember that Dan's site is situated in the Pacific Northwest (Selma, Oregon). So this site would be a perfect area for that. I think that a separate thread, and perhaps a separate museum here would work well. How about it, Linda? I started diving in Salem Oregon, and we formed a high school dive group called the Salem Junior Aqua Club. We met at the same time and place as the Salem Aqua Club, and accompanied them on their dives. I have dived the freshwater and saltwater areas of Oregon, and have a history of photographs too. I have been to the Puget Sound area, but not as often. Here is a photo of me diving with the Salem Junior Aqua Club in Puget Sound, about 1963: John

That is a cool picture. Do you have anymore to share? What I am thinking about doing is perhaps creating a forums format. I have to figure out how I am going to divide the forum up and I will probably need some partner to get this thing up and running. The only thing is that this will probably be done within a span of 2-3 months. I am going to college right now and schoolwork along with work take up a huge chunk of my time. I am open to any ideas or suggestions anybody may have on getting the site going.

Great news! The wheels are starting to turn on getting the site put together. I have the URL address.... www.nw-diving-history.comYou can have a look but I still have some construction to do with it and smooth out some rough edges. It should be ready for business by 12/27/2008. I am still open to any ideas anybody may have.

The subject of forums has come up before and I think the general consensus among members has been that there are "too many" forums already. It's hard to visit them all. As far as history, I don't think we need a separate thread... I mean, that's what this site is all about in the first place, basically. People can start new threads whenever they want. And as far as a museum, it is already on the site - see the link in the menu above that says "Online Museum". Anyway, good luck with your endeavor!

Thanks for your feedback. While the site is still in development, I have considered other ways to put this out. I have seriously considered two ideas. The first is to probably make it go beyond the Northwest and make it worldwide. The second idea is to simply make it into a gallery-oriented site with a spot for stories and other news. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
I hope you don't think I am trying to compete with this great site. I guess I am one to think that there still isn't enough sites on the net about past diving. That's just me though!
Thanks again!

Competing didn't occur to me. The internet is fair game. I wish you luck - I was just relaying members' previous responses to the idea of yet another forum.

Just an update to share with you all. I have just redesigned and reconfigured the site. The photo gallery is up as is the heading banner. There's still some work to be done on it though. Take a look..... nw-diving-history.comI will be creating some link banners sometime today. If I get more of this done, I might be able to open the site up before December 27th.

Since I am snowed in here in Spokane and since I had nothing else I had to do, I am happy to say I am done with the site. There is some minor things I still have to do with it but it is ready to roll!
