As many of you remember, Andre Laban was a member of the Calypso crew and was made a bit famous when he appeared on an episode of "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" painting underwater.
One of the episodes even references one of those gallery things where they show peoples work taking place in L.A.
Anyway, I cannot find his prints anywhere. Does anyone have a link or a good place to start looking?

Dave, I don't know anything about their whereabouts, but while I was watching that with my wife, I just about (expletive-deleted) myself about how cool that is! I was thinking while watching it, you could only see the back of the canvas, "Eh, probably not very good..." but when they reveled the finished pieces... WOW--he's good--really good!
Been working on a sketch, for my second painting, of myself in my gear: I have one done, but want to have at least two before I post them here. My work is rather "illustrative" in style, reminiscent of National geographic of the 1950-60's.

I found this: Hmmmm, there's a type of painting called "En plein air", in the open air, usually shortened to just plein-air so I wonder if you might call his work plein-aqua, in the water ;D Jaybird

Labanus passed away at 90. When I emailed him last, he hadn't dove in a couple of months but was doing well. Andre was full of insight and wisdom. Here's the article on the Cousteau Society website. www.cousteau.org/english/c-etait-andre-laban--ingenieur-de-la-soucoupe-plongeante_cd2_287.htmlI'm glad I was able to email him, another legendary diver has hung up his fins. I believe his art dealer is still selling some of his works, as well as his books and DVDs. PM me and I can give you the link to his dealer if you'd like. TD

TD, good for you for reaching out to him! It's always nice when someone famous responds: it's very humanizing, that is, it makes the person that much more real and admirable. Being a good artist is hard work, and coming up with real ideas, not someone else's, is half of what makes it so difficult: the other half is talent. Art is very subjective, and for some of us, you don't get appreciated until you're dead... So good for Mr. Laban JB
