To follow-up on the question about the DA Aqualung, Fred Roberts in Basic Scuba states:
Table 3-23. Trouble Shooting the DA Aqua-Lung Regulator
Complaint--Origin
...Too hard to breathe. This complaint has to be discounted when it comes from a beginner whose breathing is not yet regular.
Repair Method
Tighten slowly the adjusting screw (32) in the spring retainer (30) in order to compress the high pressure spring (31). Do not try to make the inhaling too easy, as you run the risk of having leaks...For precise adjustment use gauge 1116. Scerw gaupe in, in lieu of nozzle 1000-10 to read 100 to 110 psig while regulator is on tank with air turned on.
Getting back to the Pirelli, I now seem to remember something about a regulator which rebreathed some of the exhalation, but did not realize that the Pirelli was the one.

Re: John's comment on the 'Explorer' - 'hard breathing' IAs mentioned, I used this rig and others like it quite a bit and never found the breathing to be particularly stiff. It's about like a pre-venturi DA - the rebreathed portion of the breath is effortless in the upright position - maybe a hair stiffer in the horizontal swimming plane and stiffest in a head-down decent position - but not objectionably so. Maybe something wrong with that particular unit?? - the bowden wire has to be set up properly for max efficiency, but it should breathe OK the way it comes - unless you put it way out of adjustment without realizing it?
