My copy of "Basic Scuba" is a first edition (1960), but it came without a paper cover when I bought it, if I remember correctly, in a San Francisco used book store on my first visit States-side in the early 1980s. It cost me $6.50 back then, marked down from $12.50 (or so it says in pencil on the inside page).
One of the best diving books ever, not least because of its detailed and informative seventh chapter "Survival in Cold Water - Rubber Suits" and first appendix "Swim fin analysis". This book has everything for its time and even contains a "final written test" with the answers at the end of the volume.

Just check the price on Amazon. 4 offers, $195 to $250. I won't be getting one anytime soon!
Although this happened when I tried to buy a book I used at college,"Designing Tomorrow's Cars". $200 to $300. I checked every so often for 8 months, and got 2 copies for $10 and $15.
Anyone seen a used copy for sale lately at that price?

I bought Roberts (1963) on line for about $20 from Amazon a couple years ago. I also bought the Soviet Diving Manual for about $4. I think you just have to keep checking.

Yeah I can see how you'd be particularly interested in those informative chapters, DRW! Cold water, indeed. And you and John must have extensive correspondence concerning the finer points of "Swim Fin Analysis". Funny how the word anal-ysis starts out..... Oh, I am right there with you! As well as all those thoughts about diving technique, etc., this book has saved many a regulator-centric vintage enthusiast's butt (at least one...), due to the detailed drawings, photos, written descriptions, and other details of early regulator technology Mr. Roberts has included within! It's inarguable that he has also settled many a disagreement over vintage scuba equipment minutia, as well!

Really dumb question but I will ask anyway. Does anyone have a copy of the paper dust cover from the first ed. of "Basic Scuba" that I could get a printed copy of? Mark Mark I know this post is 2 1/2 years old but I just saw it. I have a 1960 edition of Basic Scuba, with a dust jacket. It's not in great shape but if you're still looking for a copy of the dust jacket I'd be glad to copy it and mail it to you.

I've probably posted this before but here is Sam Miller and I last year at Sam's kitchen table. I'm holding his copy of Basic Scuba. He has all three editions that Roberts signed for him. Pretty cool.
