Hello all!
Is anyone interested in getting together in Monterey for a weekend of vintage diving? October is usually the best time to dive here, the weather is perfect and the area isn't too crowded because the summer vacationers are back home. Please express your opinion here. If enough people express a strong interest in it I will try to get some support from local dive shops and clubs. In the meantime, if you are going to be in the area and would like to get together, please contact me. My email is : jbt@tarhalla.com
Crabby Jim (Happy to be back in Monterey)

Jim, I'd be very interested! I can let Jim at Steele's know about it if you'd like. He might want to be involved. Phil

I don't know what my finances or schedule will be at that time, but I'm interested. Summer vacationers being home is a double edged sword. It's less crowded, but my children being back in school makes it more difficult for me to get away.

Monterey is a long way from Louisiana, but it would be cool to get together with you guys and give some of the old gear a spin. My collection is slowly growing, so who know what I'll have by Oct. If y'all can get some dates together, I might see if I can put it on my calendar.

I seriously doubt I will attend this time, but should be ready for the next one. I shouldn't rush anything while rehabbing my back JB

Mark Dang son, that lag in communications must be a real killer, what is it, in the hours? Whereas I'm closer, just on Luna... I know, shut up smart a$$! JB Okay, JB, you're on! I had a discussion about using scientific notation and the Health and Science School two weeks ago, where I was doing some tutoring. I looked up the distance between the Earth and Europa, and Google quoted me a firmer of 390.4 million miles. Now we also know that ligh travels at a velocity of 186,000 miles per second. So here it is in scientific notation: 390,400,000 miles = 3.904 x 10^8 miles 186,000 miles/second = 1.86 x 10^5 miles/second Now, 3.904 =~ 4, and 1.86 =~ 2 (4 x 10^8 miles) / (2 x 10^5 miles/second)= 2 x 10^3 seconds = 2,000 seconds 2,000 seconds / 60 seconds/minute = 33.3 minutes (approximately) The above was done on paper without aids. Now, I will check it, first with my slide rule, then with my TI-83 Plus calculator. Slid Rule: 2.099 x 10^3 seconds / 60 seconds/minute = 35 minutes Calculator: 2098.9247 seconds / 60 seconds/minute = 34.9821 minutes = rounded to 35 minutes You can see that the estimate done by hand was pretty accurate, and that the slide rule actually nailed the figure to 3 significant figures. The calculator's number of 34.9821 minutes is actually misleading, as the original number given for the distance between the Earth and Europa did not take into account either the orbits of Jupiter or Europa, or the or it of the Earth, as these distances would vary. This was an interesting mind experiment. Thanks. John PS, that's 0.5830 hours, or about 0.6 hours of lag time. By the way, I told the kids that scientific notation made the math much easier, and this illustrates that observation. When I showed these seventh and eighth graders my slide rule, they thought that was pretty neat. One of the students said, "I've got to get one of those."

John, that's all good, but what about roaming charges: that could become very costly unless you have a really good plan... JB

Oh and be VERY grateful you don't have to deal with Bay Area-drivers: last night we saw some dirt-bag tale-gating someone less than three feet from someone's bumper, and a myriad of other entitled-moves: I was getting seriously PO'ed just watching it JB

I'd love to meet board members that could make it! Maybe even if you aren't able to dive, you'd come down just to add 2 cents to the gathering? Just bring all your stuff to share. Just seeing everyone's collections would be awesome! Even if it's single hose stuff? .

Hmmmmm! I really gotta think about this one... I really don't like feeling like Tiny Tim, sittin' around while all the other lads are playing cricket... Kinda stinks a whole lotta miles a minute Sincerely, The little Cripple Boy
