So, Mark and John and JB have got this whole conversation going about single hose regulators? And they started to look like they were having fun with it? And I don't have much interest is single hose regulators? BUT! I ran into this interesting regulator by accident. I bought it for its console and some hoses, and was going to ditch the rest somehow. It was a pretty cheap deal. I got a three gauge console with depth, spg, and compass and two bcd hoses for about $25! Didn't care about the regulator , but then I looked it up and found out it's actually a pretty interesting rig. It has a venturi tube that is on the exterior of the can going from the valve right into the mouthpiece! I like venturis! People seem to revere this regulator.
I hooked it up, and Bob's yer Uncle! No leaks, no exploding spgs or hoses. Didn't try to breathe on it (learned my lesson back aways: check for spiders and other nastiness before you go and breathe off it). But the purge works and all seems kopacetic.
I'll dismember this one and see what's what! You lot probly already know everything there is about this one so now I can join the single hose fun!
Check out that venturi. Noice.
Phil

I just got one from my LDS for about $10, and these are great regulators. The MR-12 II is the one I've got, and the only difference is that the cover on mine is chromed brass, rather than plastic. This venturi is a new attempt to "beat" the U.S. Divers Company patent on their second stages with the venturi piped to the mouthpiece internally. The vortex created by this MR-12II/III regulator is great, and provides even better breathing at depth.
The only down-side is that this regulator will freeze-up earlier than other designs due to the external pipe exposed to the water. I had one do that in Wohink Lake on a winter checkout dive in the 1970s in about 37 degree water.

Well, you guys are just up-right inspiring with all this classic vintage single hose talkin'! i recently bought a box-o-regs and one one them is a AMF swimaster MR12. the model i have looks just like JB's MR12 titan but mine just has the different label. my question is: were these MR12 regs a balanced design? and doe's anyone have parts for this reg? i may have a couple of other classic single hose regs to trade for parts to get this MR12 back down to davy jones locker BC

BC, the only thing about yours is this little chingadera: Even with my shaky hands, I was able to replace the o-ring. Nearly everything else is an easy find except for the second stage diaphragm, which I believe is the same as a Mares Abyss. Yes, it's a balanced reg. and that dingus does the balancing Hopefully one of these days soon I'll be parting with mine: I only want Healthways and Dacor gear! JB

Oh, I fergot! The HP valve seat is slightly different on the Voits: you can use a USD but you'll need a different push-rod, an' that'n you just kinda trim down 'til it's right JB

I'm gunna tear into that Mares MR12 III soon. I like the venturi aspect. I'm not sure I want to have bubbles going up my ears anymore, though! Single hoses are kew, available, and you can get them cheap, but not my thing. I totally get the collector's standpoint. Even so, I seem to be filling up my single hose box! Now it's got a Scubair, a Calypso, a ScubaStarTDQK, the Mares MR12, and a strange and wonderful Seamless reg.

Please be sure to take pictures of the gizzards! The HW's were nice because the really channeled the air past your mask better than any other: but I understand the irritating aspect of single hosers, like being stuck in a washing mashing or getting yer head flushed down a toilet ad-nauseam. After while you just kinda deal with it though JB

Those who watched Seahunt SAW it, but did they realize what a difference the exhaust coming off the back made? I am gob-struck by the difference it makes. I dove single hose regs for years, and just thought that's the way of it. I will document the autopsy of the Mares MR12. It works now; hopefully, it is refurbish-able without too much replacement of parts!
