John- That diaphragm looks like the one I'm going to trim and modify. I was thinking about this a little more and realized the Snark3 uses a very similar setup to the Sportsways and they don't use a tab, so Johns thought that the tab is not required if the non return valve in the mouthpiece is in good working order, I'm thinking is exactly right.

The Snark III exhaust mushroom has a bump on it to prevent the diaphragm from blocking it closed. Sportsway and Healthways (late Deluxes and all GLs have a tab soldered to the can) went to the tab for a reason! This is a late (serial #B8582) Deluxe can with the tab. One of my Deluxes, B7476 did not have a tab so I'm thinking they started around #8000?

I stand corrected on the Snark 3. I looked at one of mine and it does have 2 bumps on the can to prevent interference. My bad.

PY, I remember being at Steele's and seeing the top of a Deluxe can with the tab, I didn't check the number. When I did mine I was deliberately going for overkill for more surface area for the friction plate to rest on.

Today I made some progress on the Healthways diaphragm in the Sportsways Hydro Twin II. I took a slight amount off the diaphragm and it fits perfectly. Now on to the tab.
PY-any suggestions on a particular type of rivet to try? I'm also thinking I'll need something to seal around a rivet if I go that route. Anybody have any thoughts on a sealant that won't be toxic.

Actually, I don't think you'll need a sealant. Make the hole a bit smaller in diameter than the rivet, or if the hole's already there, select a rivet slightly larger in diameter than the hole. Then simply put it together. It should seal itself with the force applied to the pop rivet and washer. John

I agree, if you put it in the diaphragm. If you drill the box for a rivet, you might need to seal it. A dab of RTV?

I've done some more checking on the Healthways diaphragm in the Sportsways Hydro Twin II. In the picture John posted the rivet that is shown holds a rigid plate on the lever side to the silicone material. My thinking now is that rivet is dead center, and may actually keep the diaphragm from interfering with the exhaust mushroom. A comparison I think is put a golf ball on the table and put a dinner plate over it, only one side of the plate will contact the table. No matter which part of the diaphragm touches the mushroom there will be enough area available for exhalation.

I put the cans together on the HT II, and encountered a small issue. The Healthways diaphragm appears to be thicker, thus keeping the band clamp from closing enough to get the screw in. I could use a longer screw but the distance sets the alignment off. I'm going to put this reg on a tank and check how it functions without the screw in (No I'm not going to dive it this way). I did hold 2 points down on the exhaust mushroom with my fingers and it still flows enough for normal exhalation.

Skip, those are kinda thick at first even on the HW's, at least this has been my experience! Use your longer screw for now and try a bit of dish detergent or spit to see if you can get it to seat just a little better.
Just a thought...

Yup. Just source a longer (1/4"?) 4-40 screw and crank it down. The clamp will hold it all together, no problem, even with an extra 1/8" gap. After a few months, you'll get the original screw back in, probably.

Here's another update guys. As I said earlier I don't want to permanently alter this reg including possibly opening the band clamp wider to accommodate the thicker Healthways diaphragm. I tried the Healthways diaphragm as an experiment. With the band clamp around the cans to hold everything together I put a hose loop on this reg. It worked fine, then to check how it would act if the one way valve in the inhalation hose were not functioning properly, I removed the mouthpiece valve from the intake hose. Exhalation was still fine. So I would say the experiment was a success. The existing rivet and plate does keep the diaphragm from interfering with the exhaust mushroom. If I was going to leave this diaphragm in the reg I'd put a dab of RTV on the river to prevent it from damaging the exhaust mushroom.
Time to put the Sportsways diaphragm back in it and get it back in the water.
