Hi all, Any interest in a vintage dive gathering at Lower Bear River Reservoir this summer? The lake is about 5-6K feet in elevation and is pretty unused. It should be a good freshwater dive spot. Phil

That would be fun. I might be able to make it later in the summer.

In case you guys need to use these, as you may be diving vintage, here are some older tables from the 1970s: John

At altitude, I can tell when to call it a day when my lips are tingling and my joints begin to hurt.
just kidding
Thanks for those tables, John. I have a copy of "The Skin Diver's Bible" that explains altitude diving pretty well. I have to refer to it each time because it's a bit confusing to me (e.g. actual depth vs. "theoretical" vs which type of depth gauge reading) and I don't do it often. Those tables together like that will be very handy if I can print them out.
I hope this idea isn't already dead in the water. (O.K., probably not the best idiom for diving!)

Terry,
Just use a capillary depth gauge for your dive, which will give you about a 20% Safety factor. Then, after the dive when you are writing up your dive log, make the calculations for your depth.

I've used a capillary on several occasions. I also have an altitude adjustable (zeroing out at altitude) Princeton Tectonics. That should work on the same principle as the capillary, right?

Terry,
I think you are okay with the bottom timer zeroed out for altitude, but realize that it is reading the pressure and converting that to depth. You may need to add 3% for using it infresh water though.

My friend who is just finishing up his OW cert and I will be diving here sometime this summer. I plan to dive my vintage regulators, esp those I don't want to dip in saltwater, but can't speak for him. He'd prolly dive a vintage single hose, no problem. I am aware that altitude is a factor here, so some planning is required. I have lots of capillary depth gauges!
The dates are not set, so anyone wishing to join up is welcome if we can find compatible dates. Terry, if you and any friends are up for it, let me know availability. Weekdays are the most likely to be free for me and my friend, but we could try to set up a weekend or single day.
Pls let me know!

Do you know if this reservoir is usually full all summer for recreation? Or, is it one that is tapped for downstream use?

I too would be interested in diving this lake this summer. But after researching this lake, it appears that the lake is tapped for downstream use and the level is down quite a bit at the back end of summer. I think it would be better for diving from now till the end of July.

Vance, any ideas for dates?

I have just been trolling for interest. I am available most any time (w/in reason). I like weekdays, but I understand some people have to go to work. How 'bout we bandy some dates around? I'm in Monterey this coming w/e. 6/23-4 is weekend after next, 6/30-7/1 is the next.
I'm sure the lake will be more full early in the season. I have been there in late summer to find it very low.
Into July is also good for me. I will check in more frequently now there's some action.

Time is running out fast on this proposed dive. Terry, and anyone else if you're interested, PM me and we can discuss meeting up. My friend Jack and I are doing his last cert dive and first fun dive in Monterey tomorrow, so we should be good to go on the Lower Bear dive soon after. I have a small house with no hookup RV potential near-ish the lake, so I can accommodate a few people for an overnight stay if that appeals. Let me know!

Off to Maui, and won't be back until toward the end of July. I know, it sucks. Life's rough. And on top of it, I'm waiting to see if StopLeak will save me from a $1k intake manifold gasket replacement for a while.
I'd love to be able to make it, but it's looking "iffy", and wouldn't be until the end of the month at the earliest. If you guys go, post pictures, please.
