A while back I sold Ty my Voit VCR-5, then we got to gabbin': he knew I was a fine as well as graphic artist, so he trusted that I knew what I was doing when I offered to design a tee-shirt for him: aquala.com/product/aquala-davey-jones-t-shirt/But then he asked me to do something way out of my comfort zone, which was make the image look like a tattoo that was in someone else's style-- GULP! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailor_JerryFine artists are funny like that: even the thought of copying some one can get our hackles up for fear of someone else saying we plagiarized the idea. Well, I swallowed my fears and knocked out a sketch for him, then it was weeks of fine tuning and studying the particular artist's work. I came up with something that I could say was mine, but was influenced, and still had the flavor of what Ty wanted. So now ya know, enjoy... Jaybird PS, Ty was one of the easiest people I've worked with

I need to snag some Scuba T-shirts and will be considering this one. I think Aquala has another one that I saw on Facebook that caught my interest. Mark

Thanks, JB and I’m glad you liked how it all turned out. It was a fun project and I appreciate you being patient as things came to light. The whole thing turned out better than I ever could have imagined!

I need to snag some Scuba T-shirts and will be considering this one. I think Aquala has another one that I saw on Facebook that caught my interest. Mark Mark, there are two designs right now and these kicked off what I would call an artist’s series. In the coming months I will have other artists work on other designs, which I hope will take on their impression of what Aquala means to them and create something in their unique style. When Jay submitted his first sketch, it immediately reminded me of some old-school tattoo that a tough, hard knocks, old deep sea diver might have tattooed on his arm. It had that salty seadog look that was perfect and set the tone for slick retro designs, which is what Aquala is all about. JB’s art inspired me to contact Chad Hill, who does a lot of retro fighter/bomber pin-up/nose-art type illustrations. I asked him to give me his impression of Aquala, and that’s when he came up with “Diving Dawn”. It’s like something some frogman would’ve had painted on the nose of his underwater chariot, if such a thing existed. JB’s the man that put all of this into motion. 😀

JB I recognized the Sportsways, as I have that one in red, but I didn’t know about the Healthways. That’s what’s been fun about these projects, there are slight details that the true vintage scuba enthusiast will appreciate.

So I was not having a "heavy far out" and seeing a Healthways SCUBA?, others noticed it too? I saw the knives right off, I did not look too much in detail, but noticed the colours, and not black handles and just thought Jay is at it again!! Mark

Way off topic here, but about Scuba Diving and T-shirts. I'd love to see someone make t-shirts with dive gear companies logos, sort of like surfboard makers have. I'd love to see T-shirts for classic dive shops too, like Mel Fisher's shop in Redondo Beach, etc. Just an idea. Mark

Mark You weren’t the only one, and I’m glad you guys are appreciating the little details. If you look closely, I even had him draw in the J valve lever.

Ok, for those who haven’t been to the Aquala website and seen JB’s shirt design...here it is. It’s, “old school, because old’s cool!” 😀

Good. On the website it shows you caught the misspelling. Brining is for turkeys. I suppose divers get brined too, though!
