Got the other two today. They're serviced and ready to cut for second stages! Not sure what boxes they'll go into this time.
Anybody got a set of R-3 boxes? I have several orphan USD single stage box tops that would work.
What if I put one in Trieste boxes...It would fit w/o modding the box it if I cut a tab relief in the Dacor.
Huh. Too out there?

JB, I don't think you need to alter the Dacor boxes for your conversion. I was surprised at how much lever throw I got with James' diaphragm. It's more like an early domed Dacor diaphragm, and the contact plate sits pretty high.
Even with the modded sh lever, it gets plenty of throw before the lever encounters the IP adjuster. A split lever that avoids contact gives even more. I posted a photo somewhere showing the split and offset lever I made for one of the FX 2020s. It might be here in this thread.

I'm thinking about a different approach. It is inspired by Herman's Derringer, but is different in a number of ways. It incorporates the second stage block which brings the second stage jet to the intake horn, but also includes the normal second stage body and lever. I'll post progress!

I have made some drawings for my newest idea for the 2020 conversion, but no actual parts yet. This one will use a USD style second stage with an air director. I want to make the second stage bore centered rather than offset, mainly because there is a lot more meat to drill into and the awkwardness of the lever/HP spring retainer position. It will also address the not quite low enough jet in the 2020 mounted in C-3 boxes.
I also modded a 2020 second stage with setscrew jets ala the Titan/Triestes, which worked out very well.

After a spate of regulator sales and give-aways, I'm down to only 5-6 stock regs: 1 Deluxe, 1 NED HTII, a couple 3 Scubas, and a GL!
As I'm looking over my 10 hotrods, I see there are a couple of back-burnered projects that need and might get some attention now. The alternative Dacor second stage in the C-3 is going begging (a leak somewhere and it needs a new second stage assembly), and a couple of Titestes (one in FX boxes and one in Triestes) that need finishing.
What will Vance do when these are completed?
Huh. I have at least 3 Titan II bodies and 3 unmolested Dacor Olys, so more 2020s and Titestes are in the works. James has said he's working on 3D Trieste boxes, and his resin prints of other projects look really good. Maybe this is the future of both the Olys and the Titans?
That'd be so kew...

Well, I cut an orphan Mistral box for another Oly. This one will get the new style second stage that I've got in the works. Photos to follow!

I go around and around about how to get the jet pushed all up into the intake horn. I have an idea that utilizes a brass block with a hole drilled through that directs the jet stream right in. It could easily incorporate an adjuster that would vary venturi strength.
But, that whole thing seems to be unnecessarily complicated. Attachment holes would need to be drilled and threaded, some sort of gasket would be needed between the second stage body and the director, etc.
I've threatened to make a Mistral-like nozzle many times, but never did. Maybe this one gets one?

Hello. He is arrived this week, and I make a dive Thursday, I really enjoy this dive, after few minutes to check a low deep. I continue the dive. Total Time 52 minutes and 17 meters (55ft). The dacor 2020, with the large diaphragm had a light inhalation, even with a inhalation valve in the mouthpiece, so he is very confortable. Thank Phil for this beautiful masterpiece. Fred, I'm glad to hear that you had a very positive experience with it I like all the contrasting textures in your photos: the bricks make a nice background! Jaybird

Hello JB
Thanks, I am a poor photographer. I would like to compared the dacor2020 my titan DH conversion, and a DAAM 🤔.

I would like to compared the dacor2020 my titan DH conversion, and a DAAM 🤔. Seeing as Phil did the work, I can't help but wonder if Dacor and Voit will even be distinguishable for each other JB EDIT: i see that as a very good thing!

I am very jazzed that you like it Fred! Thanks for the dive report. I'm hoping Ty has as good an experience with the 2020 I sent him to dive test. I haven't yet set up the next 4/800 body for a second stage drilling. As I mentioned above, I cut another Mistral top box for a Dacor (or Titan), and plan to do a center drilling (rather than the usual offset) on the next Dacor. This will sport some sort of air nozzle/block to get the jet right up in the intake horn. IMG_4611 by Vancetp, on Flickr This is not because the offset doesn't get the jet close enough, but because of two other considerations: One is that drilling the offset is touchy due to the very thin margin you have to work with, and the hole has to be 9/16", which is smaller than a USD second stage (5/8"). Centering it in the body gives plenty of acreage for a 5/8" hole. Using a 9/16" hole requires extensively modifying a USD poppet. The other consideration is the lever. A normal split lever will not clear the IP adjuster as much as I'd like when the second stage is offset, without making an offset lever. This is the lever on the reg Ty will be testing. If the second stage is centered, the normal split lever will avoid the IP adjuster. I just returned from Mexico, so I haven't been at the bench for a while. Not a lot has been accomplished in the last couple of weeks. I'll keep posting on this as I go.

Phil,
Keep up the great posts, as this is very interesting to a lot of us. I will always wonder whether Dacor would have faired better if they had come up with a viable Dacor Olympic/R-5 regulator?
