I dove July 4 with my Phoenix DAAM. I bought this reg of "the bait", I think it needs an overhaul. When I got it, it had the Phoenix with the original second stage and a rubber duckbill which was toast. When I turned the air on there was a loud pop. During the entire dive it felt like the valve wasn't open all the way, but it was. It delivered air but not the way I expected. I think my next dive I'll try out one of my Snarks.

I love my Phoenix (on a DAAM and on a Voit Navy). I got my first Phoenix on the DAAM in about 2010 (I think). It was my go-to reg until I got my Kraken in 2014. Dove it a bunch then let it sit about 4 years. Had a IP problem and a pop sound. Ordered an overhaul kit and it is as good as it ever was. My 2psi. M

Herman- When I got it I opened it up, as I said the duckbill was toast so I put a DBE in it. I checked and replaced the mouthpiece valves. It had a silicone LP diaphragm (with tabs) but I installed an HPR second. I didn't pull the first stage or HP diaphragm because IP was steady as a rock at 140. I now suspect where the duckbill and original mouthpiece valves were bad, maybe the HP diaphragm is bad and too stiff. I suspect the popping I'm hearing is the HP diaphragm. Everybody please keep in mind I'm NOT badmouthing the Phoenix, but from everything I've read I believe it should perform as well as a Cyclone. This one doesn't. Again this reg came from "EBait" so I don't know what it was subject to. I do know it was setup half-a**ed

This subject came up on the Deepstar thread, and I thought it deserved a thread of its own.

Just open up that sucka MC. Put a new HP diaphragm in, check and resurface the HP seat if needed, refresh the LP seat, adjust, and it'll be like new!

You know, the Phoenix DA Aquamaster is not too well known, even in the Vintage Scuba community. We would very much like to see yours, and follow it's service and possible rebuild. My understanding is that the Phoenix first stage is an improved balanced first stage that offers LP and HP ports. It should breath as well as a Royal Aquamaster; if it is not, something is definitely wrong.

John John, I believe I saw on VDH that the Royal Aqua Master is a good breather, Cycline better, and the Phoenix the best. Offering a larger orifice for air to flow thru as well as offering multiple ports for hp and lp hoses, the PRAM is a definite improvement over the RAM. Jonathon Bird uses it in most of his episodes with a DAAM. So it ends up being a PDAAM or PAM. See what I did there TD

My own personal experience is that they are very hard to tell apart breathing-wise. I do think the Phoenix has better breathing characteristics than the Cyclone (both balanced 1st stages). I go back and forth between my Phoenix and my Kraken as to which one breathes better. Still can't decide. Here are some screen grabs from VDH that show the difference between a RAM and Cyclone. Probably Luis' drawing and Bryan's photos so all credit is given. Also threw in VDH's Phoenix pic. I highly recommend upgrading your DAAM or Voit Navy with either the Cyclone or Phoenix. The ease of breathing is amazing (when combined with an HPR 2nd stage of course). My 2psi. M Cyclone Cyclone Phoenix

I have a DAAM with a Phoenix first stage, HPR second, DBE, DSV and new, long hoses. Works well and Vance hates it.

Skip, this seat should do well with my resurfacing method: wrap the stem in a few layers of masking tape, lock it down in a drill chuck, spin up, and briefly touch the surface with 1,500-grit paper--yer done!

Scubalawyer- I have 2 Cyclones with HPR seconds, DBE's. Both of them are much easier breathing than this Phoenix.I think maybe I should put overhaul kit in it with a new high pressure diaphragm. I think everything else in there is new. That will raise another dilema. This is an early Phoenix which uses the Late Ram/ Conshelf yoke. I have a very late RAM and I think this Phoenix might deserve to be in that reg.

But don't listen to that. I admire things that work, esp if they take something and make it better. If a thing is old and works the same as some other new improved thing? Yowzah!! DBEs? Awesome. DSV? Nothing better. HP and LP ports? My whole life has been dedicated to adding them. Haven't you been paying attention to my posts?
