Hello everyone! Time to pick a date for our Fall 2020 Monterey Rendezvous. After we decide on a date, we will still have to determine whether getting together is advisable or even possible. September is the best time for fine weather and since salmon season has been extended into October I hope to be able to treat the attendees to some fresh caught Monterey Bay salmon, grilled to perfection at our pavillion.
Your thoughts, please.

Your thoughts, please. I vote for the 19-20 or 26-27 of September. Saturdays are best for me. I wonder if we would get a better turnout of we only did it one day, rather than two days. I'm good with whatever y'all want. Mark

For many people, that would be a lot of travel for a single day event.
I have family in Fresno. I'll keep following the thread to see what shakes out. It would be amazing to finally meet you all.
Also: Pavillion? Are you camping at Del Monte Beach or staying in a hotel. I've stayed at the Borg's Motel in Pacific Grove and it's across the road from some OK shore dives. But, I have not been int hat area for nearly 30 years.

Glad to see someone planning to attend the event but don't plan on camping at Del Monte Beach unless you are going to hang out with the homeless people. There is no camping there. If you are retired military or a disabled veteran there is a campground by the airport.
It may be time to re-think this year's gathering. Monterey County is still under a shelter-in-place order which is being modified today. Restaurants are still closed except for takeout and setting up pavilions and tables, as is our usual practice, is not allowed yet. If there is a second wave or second peak of Covid-19 there may not be a gathering this year, especially since John and Phil are in the high risk category.
Speaking of high risk, I got into a fist fight with my boat last Saturday and lost. I am sporting a shiner that I will not be posting pictures of.

Hopefully, things will have improved by September, but it is my belief that we'll still need to be somewhat concerned about a second wave. While I might be in the higher risk category, CJ had to be careful of saber-toothed cats as a lad. I believe that might be what caused the crabbiness?

I'm game. As long as there's at least 6 foot vis and we carry 6 foot octos, we should be within safe protocol.

The beaches in Monterey are opening today for all uses. Perhaps we may have a gathering after all.
Please post your preference for a preferred date and whether you prefer one day or two.
I think that one day, Saturday, would be fine. If you want to stick around for another day, that's up to you of course.
As to the date, September 5 has the most even tides:
Sat 05: high 12:39 AM PDT 4.6 ft; low 6:59 AM PDT 1.2 ft; high 1:16 PM PDT 4.6 ft; low 7:25 PM PDT 1.7 ft
If we look to October, the most even tides are on the tenth.
Sat 10: high 7:34 AM PDT 3.8 ft; low 11:29 AM PDT 3.4 ft; high. 5:05 PM PDT 4.7 ft
The weekend of September 5 is Labor Day weekend and October 10 is Columbus Day weekend.
I vote for a one day event on October 10.

We aren't locked in to September 5 or October 10. I just picked those days because of the even tides. It's easier for old people like Phil to enter and exit when it's not too wavy. All of the other weekends are open and I am happy with any day that will accomodate more participants.

Good Morning everyone, October has been chosen as the date for our Monterey event but the Covid-19 pandemic continues to cast a pall over our annual gathering. Here is a link to the latest local news on the subject: www.montereycountyweekly.com/news/Mostly, whether we have an event depends on two things: first, will the beaches and parks be open? second, will it be prudent for us to get together? If the county is closed down we might not be able to gather in a public space or find a restaurant for a communal meal. The County has closed the beaches for the July 4th weekend but people are still able to cross them to enter the water. We'll see how that works out.

Sorry CJ, perhaps next year for us, there's way too much at stake here: the road to hell is paved by good intentions...

Being the overly optimistic type, if the magic pandemic cure fairy graces us with his/her/its presence, I'm there! Sorta doubt it will be safe to travel by October but I am all for playing it by ear and making a last minute decision. After all, it isn't like there is a ton of infrastructure to assemble/disassemble. [Can a card table and pop-up awning be considered infrastructure?] My 2 psi.

This is an update on the possibility of getting together this year. As a Monterey Bay Aquarium volunteer guide, I receive information from the Aquarium on their reopening planning. The earliest date for reopening is now September 4, 2020, which is the Friday of Labor Day weekend. I doubt that it will happen due to the continuing increase in the number of new cases in the state and the nation (https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/coronavirus-us-cases-deaths/?hpid=hp_no-name_hp-in-the-news%3Apage%2Fin-the-news&itid=hp_no-name_hp-in-the-news%3Apage%2Fin-the-news). Remember that the Aquarium is an indoor venue while we gather outside. Nonetheless, unrelated groups are still not able to gather and interact socially, which explains the lack of dive classes at San Carlos Beach (the Coast Guard Breakwater). Here is a link to the cam that will eventually spin around to show you the beach: adventuresbythesea.com/ocean-cam/Entry to the water is still allowed so anyone wanting to join me for a birthday dive on July is encouraged to meet me in the Breakwater parking lot. I plan to do a couple of short dives with different combinations of vintage gear. Conclusion: we may be able to get together in October. Consult your Magic 8 Ball for the probabilities.
