I drew up specs, PY did the machining and refined my specs to make them better.... It's an adjustable inlet fitting using an SP109 orifice. I need to get it in the pool for hands on testing, but using the venerable bucket method I believe it's currently set at approximately .3 inches cracking pressure... I'm certain I will need to de-tune it a bit! Just for perspective, same 1st stage, same 2nd with the factory inlet swapped back in is at 1.5 inches (ish) for cracking pressure. I believe I may have the best 1085 on the planet now! Second picture (if my pictures worked) is the fitting next to a brass pick after my first every try at nickel electroplating... needs more, but I was impatient!
Respectfully, James

I think I understand what you have done but my dense brain has not fully grasped the subject yet.

Unlike Mark, I haven't a clue as to what you have done. Please explain, using short sentences and small words. Additional pictures will be helpful.

On a 1085 second, the inlet fitting has the volcano orifice (hard seat) machined into it, thereby fixing the amount of preload on the poppet spring. End result is that the there are only 2 ways to adjust cracking pressure... Change the supplied IP (higher IP reducing the cracking pressure), or modify the spring (I've heard of people trimming the spring to reduce cracking pressure). This fitting has the orifice as a separate, and adjustable, piece. By backing out the orifice, I reduce preload on the spring, thereby reducing cracking pressure. Same design as the SP108HP. I shamelessly stole the idea from 108's (and nearly all modern second stages). So now I can adjust the second stage to the first stage (with much greater range) rather than having to adjust the 1st stage to the second. Of course, it being in raw brass has started me down the rabbit hole of nickel plating (I'm cheap).
Factory fitting is on the left, HP fitting and orifice is on the right; Respectfully, James

I've refined the design a bit more, making the body just about 1" overall length. It should only end up being slightly longer than the OEM body. We left plenty of room to adjust the orifice in and out in the first one, but it really can't go far and still seal, so not much room is needed.. I'm making the new short one out of delrin to cut the cost of 'spearmintin'. Brass costs mount up, and most of it ends up chips. I'll post pictures when I finish it.

It looks like PY has a new diabolical buddy in James JB There's a possibility I might resemble that remark! lol. My surgery is healing, so I will have to resume work soon.... which will put a real dent in the hobby and experiment time, unfortunately! Respectfully, James

Thank you for explaining what you and Phil have done. Even I understand it.
1. I want one. 2. Phil is Dr. Frankenreg. Does this collaboration make you Igor?

This one was my idea and his labor (his turn to be Igor?)... I think we swap dependent on tools needed! To the first point... I don't think Phil wants to be in production mode. But if enough people want one, maybe we pitch it to someone like Herman to do a short run?

I second the Herman nomination!

I'll talk to Phil, and between us I think we can put together proper drawings. The question is who does the pitch? lol

I am def Igor on this one. His idea, my mods, and I do all the work! It's cool, 'cause, then again, tit for tat, he's playing Igor to my ideas, his mods, and he does all the work. Can it get any better than that? You bet. You're welcome! .
