Just as a heads up the rest of you: As of late the Pacific North West has been in a high pressure system with an enormous heat dome shattering temperature records: the San Francisco Bay Area is outside of this area causing below average temps, mind you I'm not complaining about that plus side of things. Now we have the Lava Fire which they believe was cause by lightning: Incident Type Wildfire Start Date 2021-06-24 Last Updated 2021-06-29 07:42:53 Admin Unit Unified Command: CAL FIRE Siskiyou Unit and Shasta-Trinity National Forest County Siskiyou Location Hotlum Rd and Lumm Rd Acres Burned 13,330 Percent Contained 20% Here's a picture of the fire: that's Mount Shasta that the smoke is obscuring! Because the area is at the foot of a volcano, the terrain is in a lava flow, it's making it difficult to get equipment in to fight the blaze. JB

It was 111 degrees F here yesterday at this time (3:00 PM), and right now it’s “only” 92 degrees F. My flowers have dried out despite waterings from the low humidity.

We now have two major fires in Oregon, one up the North Umpqua Highway in my old stomping grounds. It is some of the most beautiful areas in the world, and it’s on fire. In its third day, it is still zero percent contained. It must be on really steep areas, but part of it is along the highway.
The other is near Klamath Falls in Southern Oregon.

SIGH--sorry to hear that! I just checked www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2021/ so far we have no major incidents, so that's a big plus. The Bay Area's been having a very mild summer, and I'm very thankful for that too JB

We now have the Bootleg fire in Southern Oregon which is a mega fire, at over 42,000 acres. The Jack Fire is in the Umpqua National forest, and it’s now over 11,000 acres.
It’s getting scary, as this is just the beginning of the fire season.

John, thanks for the heads up! Staying informed about these types of things actually helps everyone: most people just don't realize it though, and this goes hand in hand with COVID too.
Now that people have started going back to work, at physical locations, people are starting to get sick again.
With climate change we are seeing more, and more unstable weather patterns. The reason we're seeing bigger mega-fires out West is because we're not getting the normal precipitation. The majority of these fires are started in grasslands that quickly spread out wooded areas. The flora of much of the West Coast has evolved to burn, the grasses here are perennial and don't entirely die during the summer, but with the introduction of non-natives, annual-grasses, they completely die leaving leaving the perfect tender for fires. These highly invasive, non-natives were brought here by the farmers needing fodder to feed cattle and sheep, as well as coming from people's lawns.

The Jack Fire grew to 14,000 acres yesterday to today, and is now 10% contained. It has closed Hwy 138 from Steamboat to a point near Diamond Lake. This is bad news, as Steamboat Creek is world famous for steelhead fishing, and I’ve dived it a number of times. It is a pristine stream, with rainbow trout, steelhead and salmon runs.
I’ll also scan yesterday’s Oregonian article with the headline, “Study: Northwest heat impossible without climate change.”

Here’s.a photo from KPTV’s Weather Blog: The Jack Fire is the smaller fire in the lower left middle of the Oregon photo, and the Bootleg Fire is the huge fire in the lower left of the Oregon photo. John

We have a "Red Flag" warning this afternoon until tomorrow--GULP! I'm trying not to think about this one too much as worrying doesn't help anything, but it sure is nerve-racking--SIGH! JB

The Bootleg fire is now at over 298,662 acres, and may merge with another fire soon. This is going to be an epic fire season in Oregon. John PS, Monday, July 19, 2021, this Bootleg fire is not at 343,735 acres, and is 25% contained (most likely on the upwind side, where containment is easiest).

John, yeah, we're starting to get your smoke now--SIGH! That thing is a monster isn't it? I went to the Calfire website to contrast it with the SCU Lightning Complex Fire which was 396,624-acres. Last year we had:
Estimated Acres Burned: 4,257,863 Number of Incidents: 9,917 Fatalities: 33 Structures Damaged or Destroyed: 10,488 There's a new fire called, "The Chicken Fire" up near Mount Lassen that was started yesterday... JB

John, the sad thing is, is that the science backs all this up, but people still deny that anything is wrong. It's important to look at the whole picture and not just "cherry pick" your data to refute the numbers. JB

The meteorologist on the local news station said there is an air quality alert in most of Massachusetts today. He stated it is due to the jetstream bringing smoke from the fires out west all the way to Mass. I was outside earlier and could smell the smoke. Local fire chiefs were on the news also, and they stated the smoke was not from local fires.
