I’m curious to know who dives with these style clamps. I like to be able to use them, being Dacor period accurate, but I get the sense that they are not very safe and I should discontinue. I’d like your thoughts.
The other day with every breath I was getting a small intake of some water (despite being as tight as I could make the clamp on the horn, it still didn’t seal up nicely). Was this a problem that people encountered back in the 60s too with these style clamps?

Off hand my guess is your hoses have gotten hard (assuming you are using Dacor hoses) rather than a clamp issue.

I've never had a problem with tinnerman's being the cause of a leak. I've had plenty of split hoses and a nicked main diaphragm once. Even had a cracked metal horn twice where it meets the can. Might double check those areas. Tinnerman's are actually pretty easy to install and remove with a pair of blunt-tipped needle-nose pliers. I take mine off all the time to dry the hoses. Here are photos of tinnerman's on my 50 Fathom; VR-1 Sportsman; and VR-2 Mariner. Yeah, I know the mouthpiece isn't right on the VR-1 but hopefully the vintage diving gods will give me a pass.

that is a nice 50F, Mark. Did you repaint it or did Roger do it?

that is a nice 50F, Mark. Did you repaint it or did Roger do it? Neither. Found it NIB at a local garage sale for $40. It had the chrome tinnerman's on it. Had to replace the hoses and mouthpiece as they had rotted. Replaced the internal soft parts and the reg works great. I have another 50F that does need repainting and I've talked to Roger about that one. He gave me some tips on paint-matching so might try to do that one myself. M

Off hand my guess is your hoses have gotten hard (assuming you are using Dacor hoses) rather than a clamp issue. Yes you are right- they are original hoses and likely have stiffened too much in this area. Surprisingly the rest of the hose is still very pliable and great for diving, which must be pretty rare for old Dacor hoses

Pretty much all of the hoses from that era are really too hard to dive with, get a set of USD or Voit reproductions and the mouthpiece for diving, save the originals for display. Like the rest of us, rubber gets old and stiff.
