Attention all Oregon-ites. My son and I will be in Corvallis on the evening of April 10th and are looking for restaurant recommendations for dinner. Going to be near PDX on the evening of April 11th so any dinner recommendations there would also be appreciated.
We have all day on April 10th to drive from PDX to Corvallis so we may take the long way and go down the coast, heading inland at Newport. Lunch recommendations along the coastal route are welcome too.
Thanks in advance,
M

The Inn at Otter Crest used to be great, as is Mo’s, a clam chowder place, in Newport. Mo’s West is also at Otter Rock. I don’t have recommendations for restaurants near PDX, but that’s because Chris and I rarely eat out. Is your son going to attend Oregon State University, my alma matter? John www.facebook.com/moswest3/www.moschowder.com/Hi John, thanks for the restaurant info. My son and I are currently on a fly/drive college scouting tour through Northern California and Oregon. We are touring only the schools he has been accepted to. This is our last trip before he commits to one. We did the East Coast schools last month and University of Hawaii at Manoa two weeks ago. Oregon State is indeed one of the schools he has been accepted to. We will be there on Monday for a tour of the campus and the Engineering Department. Cool that is your Alma Mater. My grandfather graduated from there when it was the Oregon Agricultural College in 1919. I brought his 1919 Beaver yearbook with me to donate to the school's archives.

'Great that you got this as you are headed around the state. In Newport, you may want to go to the Hatfield Marine Science Center, associated with the Oregon Coast Aquarium too. I spent a summer at the Marine Science Center, studying marine invertebrate zoology. At Corvallis, I have no recommendations for places to eat, as I lived there in an apartment in the early to mid-1970s, and Joe Chan, my roomate, cooked our dinners. Later, when I went to Corvallis, I always visited my parents house, as they lived there. So I have virtually no knowledcge of th eating places around Corvallis. My son, Brian is a graduate of the OSU School of Engineering, and I would heartily recommend it. He got his BS there, and then went on to get his Master's Degree in Engineering at the University of Washington. OSU set him up well. If your son is so inclined, he may want to look into the OSU School of Ocean Engineering. cce.oregonstate.edu/content/coastal-and-ocean-civil-engineeringOSU also is a national leader in wave research. wave.oregonstate.eduteamer-us.org/product/oregon-state-university-directional-wave-basin/today.oregonstate.edu/news/dept-energy-awards-25-million-wave-energy-technology-testing-oregon-state-facilityThat last link is very interesting, as it is now being built and coming to fruitation for a demonstration project for wave energy. This is a joint venture between Oregon State University, Portland State University and the University of Washington. While you are on the coast, you may want to visit the project; it is close to Newport. They have a "North Test Site" and a "South Test Site." These are north and south of Newport. The North Test Site is along your route of travel, but the south test site is being built, and not far away from Newport: oregonstate.app.box.com/s/tl0cms0js7tz0k1qvzvxbm445adj03pkI'm not sure whether the headquarters on land is open for people to visit, but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask. pacwaveenergy.org/south-test-site/pacwaveenergy.org/constructionupdates/A good friend of mine sent OSU some money to be used for this PacWave Project. He is a Navy Veteran, and he received his Ph.D. in Oceanography from OSU in the 1970s. He went on to command a Naval vessel, and at one point went to Antarctica. He also served as an oceanographer taking samples and also at one point being in charge of clearing the Suez Canal after the Six-Day War. He is very interested in this project, and a supporter of OSU. Enjoy your visit, and say "Hello" to your son for me. Best Wishos, John
