Hello,
I have been out of diving for perhaps 12 or more years... I've just recently thought about getting back in as I was cleaning out my closet and found all my 'old' gear. But a funny thing happened - I noticed that my gear has become quite, well 'vintage'. Going into a diveshop the other day I saw just how dated my gear had gotten. Chrome plated brass seems to be downright anachronistic. And it gets worse - I had a stack of diving mags I put away some years ago and meant to read but never got around to it. I pulled one out of it's plastic mailer and this rather 'old' magazine had an article on how good 'vintage' regulators were and there was my regulator!
Soooo I googled up this site and thought one of my first steps in getting back into diving is to start learning a bit more about my current gear and seeing what I should upgrade and what should be put on a collector's display shelf.
I'll be posting some pix soon ...
thanks

Dive it if you can; shelve it 'til you can.
My name is Terry, and I'm a vintagedivaholic. Here, we can find the help we need. This is the vintagescubiosis retrodivicus support group. Welcome.
You may be surprised to find that most of your gear can be used just as well as it was before, and why not?! (as long as it was stored well). Post some threads and you'll see what others can offer. Have fun with that old stuff!

Some of the old stuff was built 100 times better than the new plastic stuff. That's why alot of it is still around and much sought after. Look at the prices on ebay for a RAM or a DAAM regulator. If your gear needs overhauled, and you want someone to do it, send a personal message (also called a PM around here) to Dan. Ask him for a quote. You will find very reasonable rates and excellent service. Another advantage to using the gear you have is you know how it works and responds underwater. I've bought new stuff and didn't like it at all. I'm still looking for parts to a White Stag diving mask. Best mask I ever owned. Bought a new mask, got into surge, and it kept on flooding ... and I still have never got used to a dry snorkel ...
Just remember ... a scubapro first stage, piston type, has to be flushed out with fresh water after each dive. You will see small holes in the first stage. Pour lots of fresh water through the holes to get the salt off of the spring and piston, after each dive, and the regs will last a lifetime.
