HEY, EVERYONE: WHOOPING COUGH IS GOING AROUND! Trust me you don't want it:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PertussisIt's no wonder I felt like something my cat had been playing with in the yard, beaten up and feeling like pure ca-ca! At one time I had thought I had broken a few ribs, honestly, and BTW you can burst discs and crack ribs just from coughing alone. You get stressed out just thinking about your next cough, because it hurts like crazy If you're in you late 40's or older, your immunization for this has probably just worn off. So you senior citizens go get re-immunized--please. Choky McHackencogh (Jaybird)

I had something like this all through the month of December. I had to sleep sitting up, because if I was laying down the cough was unbearable. Good luck, Jay, I hope it passes soon!!!

The sad thing is, is that my wife and I have had this for a while, okay, a looooooooooong while, for me my forth week, and my wife five! A friend of ours called last night and left a message, informing us that he has it: he got it at Christmas fer cryin' out loud One of the names for it is the "one hundred days cough": it comes in waves, you think you're okay for a few days then, "Hey stupid, I'M BACK, HA!" Linda, I hope not, but my wife has to sleep like that too: last year she got pneumonia, and her lungs have never fully recovered. She's trying not to get too bummed out, but at one time she was an opera singer, and her voice will never be the same Huh, or perhaps we just need to switch brands, after all Camels are trusted by doctors... Sorry to hear you're ill and coughing Jay. I do hope you get better soon.
Have you taken antibiotics? They are the standard treatment for this I thought, and are often used for prevention if someone in the household has not been sickened by the pertussis. I realize it is too late for prevention, but perhaps you and your bride are passing the blasted thing back and forth!
We had a similar bacterium here. Most folks were catching it between mid and late October and the town is just now getting rid of it. (Which is in line with a 100 day cough.... Hmmmm... ) Whatever it was, the coughing wasn't severe enough to be called whooping cough, but the presentation was almost the same.

Jaybird and Dave,
We have some resources and looked this up, and apparently the antibiotics only work in the first couple of weeks. But at that time the symptoms are non-specific. So the antibiotic therapy probably won't help, and you should be getting toward the end anyway. Jaybird, if you wife actually has pneumonia, hopefully she has already seen the doc. If not, she probably should.

John, no, the pneumonia was last year, grumble, grumble, grumble... Our friend, also named John, has the pneumonia that can accompany it. Apparently this stuff is kinda hard to diagnose too, and has been off of doctor's radar, that they rarely if ever look for it because they thought, at least in the States that it was wiped out Iot wouldn't surprise me to see things like polio come back too...
