- I received a really nice V2 Snark III for Christmas... Chrome is great, no corrosion. But, the soft parts are dried up pretty bad. The exhaust valve literally fell apart during disassembly. - Does anyone have a source for Snark III parts? Or an exhaust valve?

Hey, I was just looking at that thing and wondering about stuffing a duckbill in there. Have you tried that and if so, how well does it work? If I can't get the mushroom valve I may have to. I got a possible source from Spain I sent an email to and am hoping to get the original part.

I have not seen a mushroom valve for the Snark III advertised anywhere. I have a Snark III, but my mushroom valve and diaphragm are still in good condition. I would try the duckbill.
Somewhere here I documented a modification I made to my Snark III which greatly improved its performance, by channeling the venturi into the horn and away from the diaphragm.

I have a V2 and a silver that I'm rebuilding too. I would love to see what others have done to their regs.

Here's John's fix: I plan on making mine with stainless steel, and tweaking it a bit more... JB

In the 1980s I was diving the Snark III, and noticed that at higher exertion rates in heavy current, this regulator "pooped out." So I started examining the Venturi flow, and I found out that at high flows, the one or two Venturi holes directed the air flow up, and into the diaphragm. This pushed up on the LP diaphragm, dampening flow. So I got an old milk gallon jag, cut it up and by trial and error found a "wrap" of the plastic that protected the diaphragm and challeled the air down the intake horn. With this modification, the Snark III breathes like a Mistral at 500 psig, in short, very good performance.

Two Failed Attempts...- I figured it needs about a 48mm umbrella valve, which I can't find anywhere. So I got to thinking about what else could be made to work. Those flat kitchen sink stoppers came to mind. - So I went to the ACE Hdwre store and found two possibilities. I also found some possible ways to secure it in those plastic panel fasteners used for car doors, etc. They have a wide head and locking fins on the shaft... Press into a hole and they stay. I figured that could be silicone glued/sealed into the center of the stopper. - Well, the trimmed sink stoppers MIGHT work but they're pretty stiff and would probably have to be secured with just the right amount of looseness to both seal and open correctly. The panel fasteners MIGHT accomplish that but the shafts were too wide and I'm not about to drill out the hole to fit them. I tried a pop rivet but it sucked the stopper down so tight the edges lifted up. - So for now, I think I'm going to go with the "Stuff-A-Duckbill In There" idea... At least until I can find a new Snark III exhaust valve.

Eben,
One thing about the Snark III mushroom valve is that they made this valve huge (as you already know). That means, with this regulator being a pretty sensitive one, that in a vertical position it will free flow slightly through the mushroom exhaust valve. It is not bad, and only when it is almost completely vertical. If you swim in a normal, head's up position, it won't free flow.
So if you have further difficulty getting the Nemrod mushroom valve from Spain, you may want to do what Jaybird suggested above, and simply put a duckbill into the horn. It should easily accommodate a duckbill.

- I was able to connect with Enrique Dauner via Facebook. He says he has what I need! - He sent me an exploded drawing of the Snark III and asked that I tell him which parts I need. So, in addition to the exhaust valve, I listed the high pressure diaphragm with its two washers and the rubber washer for the overpressure valve. I don't know if Enrique has all of these but if he does I'd like to get them as well as the exhaust valve. I'll have this Snark III re-built to like new condition for this Summer!
