trapezus asked me to post this thread, as he is unfamiliar with how to post images and all that... My apologies, trapezus, for taking so long!
Journalist, author and film director, Pippo Cappellano specialises in the study of underwater life, and documentaries on marine biology. Vice-President of the International Academy of Underwater Sciences and Techniques (Accademia Internazionale delle Scienze e Tecniche Subacquee), member since 1983 when he received the Gold Trident Award. He is teacher of underwater cinema, author of numerous publications, among which "Una vela nel mare del mistero" (Sailing in The Ocean of Mystery), "C’era una volta il mare” (Once Upon a Time There Was The Sea) and "Il Cameraman subacqueo” (The Underwater Cameraman). CMAS and PSS diving instructor, aeroplane and helicopter pilot, skipper with experience across the Atlantic.
Pippo began his career as an underwater photographer in the Sixties with famous pioneers in the world of underwater exploration. Working as a journalist and underwater photographer, he collaborated with Italian daily newspapers and monthly magazines (Il Messaggero, Il Corriere dello Sport and Mondo Sommerso), and foreign magazines (Oceans, Underwatersport, Paris Match, Quark) with articles and photographic coverage on underwater subjects and on geographical explorations in Saudi Arabia and North Africa.
He signed some major productions for RAI 1, Italy’s main public TV channel. In 1980 on board the sloop “Alyan”, he led the Italian expedition to the Bermuda Triangle, making the series of 6 one-hour documentaries "Dimensione Oceano", awarded as “Best TV Series” at The World Festival of Underwater Image of Antibes. In 1986, he directed the series "Nel mare degli antichi", 7 x 60’ documentaries on underwater archaeology in the Mediterranean, with the scientific consultancy of Sabatino Moscati e Piero Gianfrotta. From 1986 to 1993, Pippo Cappellano presented a weekly feature on the natural world.
Ever since, he has been collaborating with all Italian public TV channels (RAI 1, RAI 2 and RAI 3), with RAI Storia, Mediaset, the History Channel, Travel Channel, France 5, Cinecittà Luce, directing a great number of documentaries and reports on an array of subjects that go beyond his main passion for marine biology.
He has also worked as underwater director of photography and cameraman for numerous Italian feature films and has done camera work on marine documentaries for BBC and National Geographic.
The careful observation of marine life, result of thousands of hours underwater, has given Pippo Cappellano a wealth of experience, which he translated in a wide range of films centred on ocean issues and marine life. In his most recent documentaries, he has been filming at high depths, reaching as much as 115 meters (380 feet) with mixed gas techniques and adding technical deep dive to his skills.
Most of his documentaries have been distributed world-wide.
In 1999 he teamed up with his wife Marina Cappabianca and ever since they joined their production skills in the making of documentaries.
Since 2009 they are both artistic directors of the International Underwater Film Festival Pelagos, yearly taking place in Rome. Pippo has also been the artistic director of the International Science Film Festival “DocScient”.
